{"id":222,"date":"2016-03-02T08:48:37","date_gmt":"2016-03-02T08:48:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/lifeatthemovies\/?p=222"},"modified":"2017-01-23T20:03:07","modified_gmt":"2017-01-23T20:03:07","slug":"being-alone-the-end","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/lifeatthemovies\/2016\/03\/being-alone-the-end.html","title":{"rendered":"Being alone: the end? \u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You don\u2019t have to be the last person on earth to feel lonely and emotionally distanced from people, but I can imagine what is worse <em>is<\/em> being the last person on earth or one of a few survivors.<\/p>\n<p>Being the last person on earth or one of a few survivors should send shudders.<\/p>\n<p>Even so, being alone does not mean you are done for, even at the end of the world.<\/p>\n<p><em>Z for Zachariah<\/em> (2015), based on the novel by Robert C. Image sourced via google images.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Ann (Margot Robbie) is a survivor, living in a house in the country, alone.<\/p>\n<p>All Ann knows about the outside world is that there are no human beings out there, apart from a few family members that left her to face the world by herself.<\/p>\n<p>She needs the beauty of the country, and her faith is a lifeline and perhaps her central source of hope in the world.<\/p>\n<p>Ann finds other human survivors, though.<\/p>\n<p>John Loomis (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and Caleb (Chris Pine) are opposites, Loomis is a scientist who thinks practically, and Caleb is a simple minded miner.<\/p>\n<p>Both come into the action at different points in the film, with Ann their objects of desire. Eventually, both compete for her.\u00a0They are both on a quest to survive, but also on a quest to alleviate their loneliness.<\/p>\n<p>Loomis will put consequences before love, but despite Loomis critically assessing their circumstances, he gets jealous as a love triangle develops.<\/p>\n<p>The love triangle is complicated by emotions, circumstances, sex, and people who are basically different getting thrown together randomly.<\/p>\n<p>But were they living on the verge of new beginnings?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_225\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-225\" style=\"width: 217px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/lifeatthemovies\/files\/2016\/03\/Ejiofor-Chiwetel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-225\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/398\/2016\/03\/Ejiofor-Chiwetel-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"Chiwetel Ejiofor (Pictured).
