{"id":1347,"date":"2016-11-23T22:37:03","date_gmt":"2016-11-23T22:37:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/lifeatthemovies\/?p=1347"},"modified":"2016-11-23T22:37:03","modified_gmt":"2016-11-23T22:37:03","slug":"winning-the-war","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/lifeatthemovies\/2016\/11\/winning-the-war.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Winning the war&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cYou may not survive what the world puts you through&#8230;\u201d \u2014\u00a0<em>Heart of Gold<\/em>, by Jon Gibson (from Gibson\u2019s Body and Soul album, 1989)<\/p>\n<p>As Jon Gibson alludes to, there are battles in life that we won\u2019t survive.<\/p>\n<p>But there is also the war which we may win.<\/p>\n<p>All of my previous posts about survival are about winning the war. Battles may be lost, but that doesn\u2019t mean the war can be won in the end.<\/p>\n<p>In <em>All is Lost<\/em>, sailor \u2018Our Man\u2019 (played by Robert Redford) is in trouble on the Sumatra Straits, after a storm batters him about and makes a leak in his boat.<\/p>\n<p>He uses his survival instinct to try and come out surviving.<\/p>\n<p>But almost everything he does, no matter how effective it seems, is moving him backward rather than forward.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Our Man\u2019 loses battles, but he may still win the war, even if by a miracle and divine grave [the hand of God].<\/p>\n<h4>Cast Away<\/h4>\n<p>A few battles won may pave the way to win the war.<\/p>\n<p>One of my favorite films of 2000 is<em> Cast Away<\/em>, which stars Tom Hanks as Chuck Noland, a FedEx executive who is marooned on an island after his plane trip goes wrong.<\/p>\n<p>Chuck doesn\u2019t win many battles on the island. Chuck loses most of his battles. He loses in his initial attempts to catch fish, build a shelter, and make fire, all basic survival \u2018things to do\u2019 if in peril.<\/p>\n<p>But he also wins some battles. A few battles won can pave the way to success.
