It’s not a day for others to recognize me or do things for me or give me things. It’s a day that I get to take a moment and truly relish the fact that I get to be a Mom.

You see, I love being a Mom, not for any other reason than…I love being a Mom. Maybe I love being Mom to Caidin but I won’t know if that’s it because as far as I can see, he’s the only kid I’m going to have. So either it’s- I love being a Mom or I love being Mom to Caidin – no matter, I love it.

It’s hard to define why I love it and during the year I don’t really think about how much I love it. But on Mother’s Day, each and every one, no matter what is going on in our lives, I wake up with a wonderful sublimely peaceful and loving feeling. It stays with me for the whole day, again no matter what happens. Chocolate smudge on my new white pants, no worries; I stepped in a hairball left by the cat, it’s ok; we have nothing for dinner, I’m sure I can whip something up – no matter what happens I’m just happy on Mother’s Day.

I think about this often; well, I think about it often when Mother’s Day approaches and I start to see commercials that encourage loved ones to go out and recognize their Moms. One commercial this year is actually bothering me because it is a series of women saying things like “tell me I’m loved”, “tell me how important I am,” “tell me you need me,” or something along those lines. Basically the message is, that Moms need someone to validate them for all that they do.

One of my messages has long been about the empowerment that comes by learning to validate yourself; to know from within that you are good, worthy, loving, joyous and that what you do is of value. If you need someone to do this for you, you will always be waiting, hoping and depending on someone else to make you feel good about your life.

When we learn to validate ourselves and know from within that what we do, who we are and how we show up in the world matters, then we are empowered. (It’s also a great thing to teach your children.)

I won’t deny that I love seeing Chuck and Caidin discussing in whispers their plan for the day, but I’d be perfectly fine with egg carton flowers and a toasted bagel, and equally if they didn’t remember at all.

On Mother’s Day, it’s not the ‘what’ but rather the ‘who’.

This year, instead of focusing on what you get or what someone says or doesn’t say, consider seeing Mother’s Day as a day to celebrate that you get to be a mom!

This is one of my favorite days of the year because I am fortunate enough to be able to celebrate it.

Thank you Chuck and Caidin!

© 2012 Christine Agro

Christine Agro is a clairvoyant, naturopath, Master Herbalist, conscious mom and author of 50 Ways to Live Life Consciously as well as of The Conscious Living Wisdom Cards (Special Moms’ Edition).
