\"\"<\/a>We got Caidin\u2019s end-of-the-year school report yesterday. The teachers at his school are so great. Twice a year we get an in-depth written report that details how he is doing, what his strengths are and where he can improve. They talk about personality, interests, behavior \u2013 it\u2019s a great resource and a great tool.<\/p>\n

As per usual, Caidin\u2019s reading is very strong. He loves to read. His math, though, isn\u2019t as strong, but we are often reminded that when you have a child who excels in one are, the other areas look out of balance. None-the-less, he has challenges with math. Caidin still loves it, but it definitely challenges him<\/p>\n

Thinking back, I wish we had spent time early on with math. We focused so much on reading with him, but never even thought to introduce math. (Just a little heads-up for parents with little ones, make both math and reading a part of their everyday!)<\/p>\n

Caidin\u2019s report said that he has a hard time differentiating coins and I didn\u2019t even have to ask him, I knew it was with nickels and dimes. I\u2019ve seen him struggle over which is which quite often.<\/p>\n

Caidin and I were talking about his report. He wanted to know what it said. So I went through the whole report with him and we talked about his strengths and about the areas he can grow and about ways he might be able to achieve that growth. When we got to the section about math, he said \u2018I know, I always have a hard time knowing which is a nickel and which is a dime.\u2019 I said to him, \u2018do you know why?\u2019 \u2018I get confused,\u2019 was his response.<\/p>\n

I thought for minute and I said \u2018I think I know why.\u2019 I continued, \u2018I think logically it doesn\u2019t make sense to you \u2013 the dime should be less because it\u2019s smaller than the nickel.\u2019 His eyes lit up. \u2018You\u2019re right,\u2019 he exclaimed!<\/p>\n

We talked about how sometimes things don\u2019t follow a logical course and for nickels and dimes he has to remember that the smaller one, the dime, is worth more.<\/p>\n

It feels really great to be able to understand who your child is and to know how they approach the world, because when we have this insight, we can help them to see things that others may not have the time to catch.\u00a0This was a mere moment in our day, almost a passing conversation, but that one piece of awareness might help Caidin with something that he has been challenged with for a while.<\/p>\n

Caidin has amazing logic. He loves to hypothesize and figure out cause and effect, but the strength of his logic can get in the way when the answer goes against what one would expect, as was the case of the nickel and the dime.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m eager to see if he now has an easier time remembering which is which.<\/p>\n

As conscious parents the more we can understand who our children are, what makes them tick and how they see the world, the better we are able to support them in their own learning and growing.<\/p>\n
