Photo courtesy of by Mike DuBose, UM News.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2><strong>Malone Becomes First Black Woman to Assume Top Office<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The United Methodist Church (UMC) has reversed anti-gay policies, including a 40-year-old provision that outlawed gay clergy and a 52-year-old policy that condemned homosexuality. UMC&#8217;s General Conference also has passed a preliminary vote on restructuring the worldwide church.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The LGBTQ+ legislation removed \u2013 without debate &#8212; language that prohibited \u201cself-avowed practicing homosexuals\u201d from entering the ministry.<\/li>\n<li>Delegates also overturned \u201clongstanding rules prohibiting clergy from officiating same-sex weddings or churches from hosting them,\u201d the UMC said.<\/li>\n<li>The church approved more inclusive language in the Book of Discipline, which outlines how United Methodists govern themselves.<\/li>\n<li>Delegates saw Bishop Tracy S. Malone become the first black woman in the denomination\u2019s history to assume the highest post in the worldwide United Methodist Church &#8212; president of the Council on Bishops.<\/li>\n<li>And the General Conference ended disaffiliation and took a step toward restructuring \u2013 or regionalizing &#8212; the worldwide church.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The General Conference, which is the UMC\u2019s chief legislative body, met in Charlotte, N.C., from April 23-May 1. The conference typically convenes every four years but had not gathered since 2019 largely because of COVID.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>UMC Addresses Gay Bans, Future Direction <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Delegates struck down a 52-year-old policy that condemned homosexuality as \u201cincompatible with Christian teaching.\u201d While UMC has reversed anti-gay policies, delegates approved language that recognizes the sacred worth of all people. And they urged the Council of Bishops to be inclusive in naming representatives to ecumenical organizations.<\/p>\n<p>In other business, the General Conference ended UMC\u2019s disaffiliation policy, which allowed thousands of churches to leave the denomination. They also set in motion plans to allow churches to rejoin the UMC.<\/p>\n<p>The recent division was the largest denominational split in the U.S. since the Civil War, according to <em>Christianity Today<\/em>. Approximately 7,600 of 30,000 UMC congregations left the church between 2019 and 2023, the organization said. Some of those churches established the conservative Global Methodist Church in May 2022, while others became non-denominational.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Group of African Delegates Protest <\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1145\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1145\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1145\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/452\/2024\/05\/yohanna.jpeg\" alt=\"Bishop John Wesley Yohanna \" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1145\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bishop John Wesley Yohanna is the Resident Bishop of the Nigeria Area\/ Image courtesy of www.unitiedmethodistbishops.org<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>About 65 African delegates and others protested UMC&#8217;s decision to reverse anti-gay policies. Meanwhile, supporters of the legislation celebrated a short distance away, the UMC reported. Among the protestors was Bishop John Wesley Yohanna of Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMarriage is between a man and a woman, period,\u201d Bishop Yohanna some speinsisted<em>. <\/em>He has previously said he would leave the United Methodist Church if it endorsed same-sex marriage, and he predicted the votes will affect church membership in Africa.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe return to Africa with important decisions to make regarding the future,\u201d said the Rev. Jerry Kulah, who led the protest. \u201cWe do not believe we know better than the Bible.\u201d Rev. Kulah was a Liberian delegate to the General Conference, as well as coordinator of the traditionalist African Initiative.<\/p>\n<p>According to the UMC, \u201cMost African United Methodist bishops have expressed strong support for the traditional definition of marriage, while also saying they are committed to the United Methodist Church, provided church policies can be adapted to the African context.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While UMC has reversed anti-gay policies, the General Conference&#8217;s vote to regionalize the worldwide church could impact the African United Methodist Church\u2019s future. The amendment now goes to the church\u2019s annual conferences for a final decision. Malone, who is resident bishop of the East Ohio Conference, accepted the president\u2019s gavel from outgoing president, Bishop Thomas Bickerton. She received a standing ovation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1151\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1151\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1151\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/452\/2024\/05\/malone.jpeg\" alt=\"Bishop Tracy S. Image courtesy of the Council of Bishops, UMC.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI am honored to serve as the president of the Council on Bishops in the midst of these challenging and hope-filled times in the life of our beloved United Methodist Church,\u201d Bishop Malone told General Conference attendees.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFresh winds of God\u2019s spirit are moving across the church and creating missional pathways for the next visible expression and witness of the United Methodist Church,\u201d she said. She added that she is \u201chope-full, encouraged, grateful and excitedly expectant\u201d for the church\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>Bishop Malone was elected president during the Council on Bishops meeting at Lake Junaluska, N.C., last November. She will serve a two-year term.<\/p>\n<p>As president, she will lead the Council on Bishops leadership team, which includes Bishop Ruben Saenz, president-designate and resident bishop of Central Texas and North Texas Conferences; Bishop L. Jonathan Holston, secretary and resident bishop of the South Carolina Conference; and Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton, past president and resident bishop of the New York Area.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>UMC Disaffiliation Policy Ends<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cThe season of disaffiliation ends today,\u201d delegate Lonnie Chafin told the General Conference. Chafin is chair of the Conferences legislative committee and a delegate from the Northern Illinois Conference.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s General Conference voted 526 to 203 to end the church\u2019s disaffiliation policy, which was added to the Book of Discipline by the special conference held in 2019. Delegates also decided that the annual conferences must establish a reaffiliation policy for churches that wish to return to the UMC.<\/p>\n<p>Lonnie said these actions \u201cwill send a message to our congregations that it\u2019s time to speak of how we come together and share the love of God.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Regionalization Moves Forward<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Following the General Conference\u2019s vote to create four equal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/latestnews\/2024\/05\/01\/united-methodists-vote-yes-on-worldwide-restructuring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regional conferences<\/a>, the church\u2019s annual conferences will now consider the plan. The voting process will begin no later than 30 days after the General Conference adjourned on Friday and conclude by the end of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>If the plan is approved, the church will be divided into the U.S., Africa, Europe and the Philippines regions. The church explained that its underlying theology and mission will remain global, but \u201cit is unrealistic to try to deploy them in exactly the same ways in Kampala, Uganda, as in Frankfurt, Germany\u2026 and expect them to be equally effective or applicable in each place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Consequently, the four regions will be able to adapt parts of the Book of Discipline to better suit their particular cultures. North Katanga Area Bishop Mande Muyombo explained that African United Methodists, for example, will continue to uphold marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Other regions will not.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSome speak of it as a solution to a General Conference that is too U.S.-centric,\u201d the church said in a series of posts called <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umc.org\/en\/content\/ask-the-umc-regionalization-part-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ask the UMC<\/a><\/em>. \u201cOthers appreciate it for its value of creating more regional control and autonomy worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are also some who oppose it because they believe it is primarily a way for United Methodists in the United States to change the rules about human sexuality in ways (opponents) cannot abide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As the 2024 General Conference came to a close, Rev. Kulah called regionalization \u201cunacceptable,\u201d while the Rev.
