{"id":796,"date":"2007-10-26T17:18:50","date_gmt":"2007-10-26T17:18:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jwalking\/2007\/10\/what-christians-should-be-comb.html"},"modified":"2007-10-26T17:18:50","modified_gmt":"2007-10-26T17:18:50","slug":"what-christians-should-be-comb","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jwalking\/2007\/10\/what-christians-should-be-comb.html","title":{"rendered":"What Christians should be combatting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For all the talk about taxes and budgets and Supreme Court justices and gay marriage, here is something that Christians should be uniquely qualified to address &#8211; a ridiculously <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nypost.com\/seven\/10252007\/news\/nationalnews\/stress_mess_in_u_s_.htm\">over-stressed nation.<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Forty-eight percent of Americans say they&#8217;re more stressed now than they were five years ago, and the same percent report regularly lying awake at night because of stress, according to a new study by the American Psychological Association.<br \/>\n&#8220;Stress continues to escalate, and it&#8217;s affecting every area of people&#8217;s lives,&#8221; said Russ Newman, a psychologist and executive director of the APA.<br \/>\nSo what is it we&#8217;re worrying about while we stare at the ceiling all night? Primarily two things: money and work, the main woes for nearly 75 percent of Americans. That&#8217;s way up from 59 percent of us stressed out over those two things a year ago.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Jesus says nothing about politics but he says a lot about himself and the kind of like he longs to give those who follow him.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\n&#8220;Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Those words from Matthew&#8217;s Gospel seem words meant for today. And those who follow Jesus are supposed to be living in that reality and leading others to that same reality.
