\nThough the situations are different, the story reminds me of the story behind the hymn, “His Eye is on the Sparrow”.<\/a> Of that song the lyricist wrote:<\/p>\n

Early in the spring of 1905, my hus\u00adband and I were so\u00adjourn\u00ading in El\u00admi\u00adra, New York. We con\u00adtract\u00aded a deep friend\u00adship for a cou\u00adple by the name of Mr. and Mrs. Doo\u00adlit\u00adtle\u2014true saints of God. Mrs. Doo\u00adlit\u00adtle had been bed\u00adrid\u00adden for nigh twen\u00adty years. Her hus\u00adband was an in\u00adcur\u00ada\u00adble crip\u00adple who had to pro\u00adpel him\u00adself to and from his bus\u00adi\u00adness in a wheel chair. De\u00adspite their af\u00adflict\u00adions, they lived hap\u00adpy Christ\u00adian lives, bring\u00ading in\u00adspir\u00ada\u00adtion and com\u00adfort to all who knew them. One day while we were vi\u00adsit\u00ading with the Doo\u00adlit\u00adtles, my hus\u00adband com\u00adment\u00aded on their bright hope\u00adful\u00adness and asked them for the se\u00adcret of it. Mrs. Doo\u00adlit\u00adtle\u2019s re\u00adply was sim\u00adple: \u201cHis eye is on the spar\u00adrow, and I know He watch\u00ades me.\u201d The beau\u00adty of this sim\u00adple ex\u00adpress\u00adion of bound\u00adless faith gripped the hearts and fired the imag\u00adin\u00ada\u00adtion of Dr. Mar\u00adtin and me. The hymn \u201cHis Eye Is on the Spar\u00adrow\u201d was the out\u00adcome of that ex\u00adper\u00adi\u00adence.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

What the Brettel’s have come to know and what countless millions of other Americans have come to learn is that there can be joy in suffering, happiness in pain, great fruit out of even the worst.
\nOne of the reasons I can say this so certainly is that I know one of the Brettel kids. He and his wife have become friends and in the sick and dark days of my own life they are there with an understanding that comes from experience. I am blessed, my family is blessed because of what he has learned from his parents pain.
\nThis begs countless questions about God and pain and suffering – unanswerable questions. But it also begs awe and wonder that even the worst can be made beautiful. Especially since his eye really is on the sparrow…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
