This video achieved brief mainstream notoriety when celebrity<br \/>\nblogger, Perez Hilton <a href=\"http:\/\/perezhilton.com\/2011-04-22-relevant-reverence-version-of-rebecca-black-friday\">posted the video on PerezHilton.com<\/a>. To be honest, I was nervous<br \/>\nabout whether or not non-Christians would \u201cget it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>But more than that, I was shocked by how many Christians didn\u2019t &#8220;get it&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>I would have been fine with mere outrage at crucifixion lyrics juxtaposed against an<br \/>\nincredibly bubbly pop tune&#8211;you know, if they simply thought the joke was one or more steps too far across the blasphemous line. But that wasn\u2019t the problem. The problem was that many Christians simply didn\u2019t understand the whole thing was satire.<\/p>\n<p>THE TOP 3 SATIRE TIP-OFFS<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>I refer to Rebecca Black\u2019s song \u201cFriday\u201d as \u201cthe greatest art in the secular world.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>I claim that hiding Christian lyrics in pop songs can \u201cdupe people into being converted.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Just in case someone didn\u2019t pick up on any of these absurdities as clear clues, I actually come clean at the very end of the video. I hated having to do it&#8211;you know, explain the punch line. But I resigned myself to this foolproof measure&#8211;just in case.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But not even that worked!<\/p>\n<p>Oh, Perez Hilton got the joke, judging by his \u201cHa! Just wait for like the last three seconds!\u201d line.<\/p>\n<p>But many, including some here at Jesus Needs New PR, apparently didn\u2019t. The comments included:<\/p>\n<p>\u201csigh\u2026 I\u2019m tired of relevancy\u2026. \u201cgotta do it Daddy\u2019s way\u2026.. blood is gushing\u2026.\u201d ????????<br \/>\nI\u2019m tired of it all\u2026. Why, why must we make Christ and his death relevant and cool and<br \/>\ncute\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow \u2013 far be it from us to speak for Jesus, but we don\u2019t think he necessarily wanted<br \/>\nto \u201cdupe\u201d people into following him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Seriously?<\/p>\n<p>The sad lesson I learned last Friday was that the idea of someone in the church creating this song to better engage a visiting audience on Easter weekend isn\u2019t outside the realm of possibility. On one hand, that\u2019s what makes good satire work. On the other, that\u2019s why so many didn\u2019t get it.
