Rick Santorum launched into a scathing attack on the left, charging during an appearance in South Carolina that the history of the Crusades has been corrupted by \u201cthe American left who hates Christendom.\u201d\u201cThe idea that the Crusades and the fight of Christendom against Islam is somehow an aggression on our part is absolutely anti-historical,\u201d Santorum said in Spartanburg on Tuesday. \u201cAnd that is what the perception is by the American left who hates Christendom.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cThey hate Western civilization at the core. That’s the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n

After asserting that Christianity had not shown any \u201caggression\u201d to the Muslim world, the former Pennsylvania senator \u2014 who is considering a 2012 run for the White House \u2014 argued that American intervention in the Middle East helps promote \u201ccore American values.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I’m talking about is onward American soldiers,\u201d he said. \u201cWhat we’re talking about are core American values. \u2018All men are created equal’ \u2014 that’s a Christian value, but it’s an American value.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt’s become part of our national religion, if you will,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe point I was trying to make was that the national faith, the national ideal, is rooted in the Christian ideal \u2014 in the Judeo-Christian concept of the person.\u201d SOURCE<\/a>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

This political rhetoric from Rick is a kind that I struggle to understand. I mean, why is it somehow anti-Christian to acknowledge the sins of our past? We don’t need to dwell on them, but why is it wrong or considered unAmerican to acknowledge them? Isn’t that what makes history important, because it offers us the opportunity to look back and learn from our mistakes in hope that we don’t repeat them?<\/p>\n

I know that humility isn’t fun or mainstream and it doesn’t score you a Fox News interview, but it’s one of the very basic tenets of our faith and we see so little of it. And if you’re going to mix politics with faith, wouldn’t humility and compassion be a more appropriate and uh, “Christian,” concoction?<\/p>\n

But as we know, humility doesn’t sell. It rarely helps you win elections.<\/p>\n

And sadly, I confess, I probably wouldn’t mention it on my blog. Why? Because people don’t click on posts about humility…
