In an interview with Steve McQueen<\/a>, Shame<\/em>‘s director, Newsweek<\/em> called Shame<\/em> a “brilliant psychosexual drama.”<\/p>\n

While I only THINK I know what that means, the interview with the director was interesting… <\/p>\n

When Steve McQueen first heard of sex addiction as a phenomenon, the British director scoffed at the idea that sexaholics need sympathy, too. \u201cLike most people, I just laughed,\u201d McQueen recalled recently over tea in Beverly Hills.<\/p>\n

But after speaking with sufferers and attending Sex Addicts Anonymous meetings in the name of research, the Turner Prize\u2013winning visual artist turned filmmaker was convinced otherwise. \u201cThe stories we heard were so devastatingly sad,\u201d said McQueen. \u201cIt\u2019s not like alcoholism or drug addiction, where there\u2019s some built-in sympathy. It\u2019s almost like the AIDS epidemic in the early days. No one wants to deal with you. You\u2019re weird. You\u2019re a fiend. That stigma is still attached.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

McQueen goes on to say… <\/p>\n

\n

\n\u201cThis movie has as much to do with sex as alcoholism has to do with being thirsty,\u201d McQueen, 42, said. \u201cIt\u2019s just an outlet. We drink or do drugs or have sex as a distraction. That\u2019s because it\u2019s hard to be a human being. Anything to numb the pain\u2014that\u2019s what we do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I mean, are all of our tactics, counseling sessions, graces, expectations, “sex for 7 days” challenges, abstinence goals, etc. etc. etc. helpful? <\/p>\n

Or does our own “psychosexual drama” a la God keep us from being truly helpful?<\/p>\n
