{"id":6626,"date":"2010-08-04T12:05:18","date_gmt":"2010-08-04T12:05:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jesuscreed\/2010\/08\/our-common-prayerbook-26-1.html"},"modified":"2010-08-04T12:05:18","modified_gmt":"2010-08-04T12:05:18","slug":"our-common-prayerbook-26-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jesuscreed\/2010\/08\/our-common-prayerbook-26-1.html","title":{"rendered":"Our Common Prayerbook 26 &#8211; 1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One theme in the Psalms that can make Protestants nervous is the theme of the personal claim to integrity that the psalmist uses as a plea with God to say &#8220;Answer me, I&#8217;ve been faithful.&#8221; Psalm 26, which connects with similar themes at the beginning and end of Psalm 25.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Thus, vv. 1-3 of Psalm 26:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<div>1 &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Vindicate me, LORD,<\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\t\t<\/span>for I have led a blameless life;<\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\t<\/span>I have trusted in the LORD<\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\t\t<\/span>and have not faltered.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>2 <span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\t<\/span>Test me, LORD, and try me,<\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\t\t<\/span>examine my heart and my mind;&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>3 <span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\t<\/span>for I have always been mindful of your unfailing love<\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-tab-span\">\t\t<\/span>and have lived in reliance on your faithfulness.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The psalmist expects YHWH to respond in vindicating\/delivering\/saving him because of his blameless life, because he has trusted in YHWH, because he has not faltered (in obedience and faith), because he has been mindful of YHWH&#8217;s unfailing love and because he has live in reliance upon YHWH&#8217;s faithfulness.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>So, he asks YHWH to put him to the test in v. 2. Check me out, check me thoroughly. This is not arrogance; this is not boastful. This is plain and simple as the truth, and the psalmist&#8217;s attitude is not so much &#8220;I&#8217;ve earned it so give it to me&#8221; but &#8220;I&#8217;ve been obedient and you, YHWH, honor obedience.&#8221; And, he&#8217;s humble: &#8220;Test me.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The whole set of verses sounds a bit like Psalm 1, and that shows up even more in the next two verses where he tells YHWH what he has not done wrong:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>26:4 &nbsp;&nbsp;\tI do not sit with the deceitful,&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>nor do I associate with hypocrites.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>5 I abhor the assembly of evildoers&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>and refuse to sit with the wicked.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Part of prayer in the Psalms is bargaining with God and laying our case before God of the reasons why we think God should answer our prayers.<\/div>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nPsa. 26:1 &nbsp;&nbsp;\tVindicate me, LORD,<br \/>\nfor I have led a blameless life;<br \/>\nI have trusted in the LORD<br \/>\nand have not faltered.<br \/>\n2 \tTest me, LORD, and try me,<br \/>\nexamine my heart and my mind;<br \/>\n3 \tfor I have always been mindful of your unfailing love<br \/>\nand have lived in reliance on your faithfulness.<br \/>\nPsa. 26:4 &nbsp;&nbsp;\tI do not sit with the deceitful,<br \/>\nnor do I associate with hypocrites.<br \/>\n5 \tI abhor the assembly of evildoers<br \/>\nand refuse to sit with the wicked.<br \/>\n6 \tI wash my hands in innocence,<br \/>\nand go about your altar, LORD,<br \/>\n7 \tproclaiming aloud your praise<br \/>\nand telling of all your wonderful deeds.<br \/>\nPsa. 26:8  &nbsp;&nbsp;\tLORD, I love the house where you live,<br \/>\nthe place where your glory dwells.<br \/>\n9 \tDo not take away my soul along with sinners,<br \/>\nmy life with those who are bloodthirsty,<br \/>\n10 \tin whose hands are wicked schemes,<br \/>\nwhose right hands are full of bribes.<br \/>\n11 \tI lead a blameless life;<br \/>\nredeem me and be merciful to me.<br \/>\nPsa. 26:12  &nbsp;&nbsp;\tMy feet stand on level ground;<br \/>\nin the great congregation I will praise the LORD.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One theme in the Psalms that can make Protestants nervous is the theme of the personal claim to integrity that the psalmist uses as a plea with God to say &#8220;Answer me, I&#8217;ve been faithful.&#8221; Psalm 26, which connects with similar themes at the beginning and end of Psalm 25.
