He blogs at <b><a href=\"http:\/\/www.andyrowell.net\/\">Church Leadership Conversations<\/a><\/b>.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><b>What are your suggestions for books about church?<\/b><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: small;line-height: 19px\"><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"entry-header\">13 Ecclesiology Conversations: Making sense of the Guilds, Conversations, Silos and Books<\/h3>\n<div class=\"entry-content\" style=\"clear: both;margin-top: 10px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 10px;margin-left: 0px\">\n<div class=\"entry-body\" style=\"clear: both\">\n<p style=\"margin-top: 10px;margin-bottom: 10px;text-align: left\">I want to help &#8220;congregations&#8221; or &#8220;local churches&#8221; to thrive.&nbsp; What I mean by that is that churches should be sitting under the Scriptures, practicing communion and baptism, living ethically like Jesus, and communicating the gospel to outsiders.&nbsp; In my work, I draw upon what I have identified as 13 different types of books which all focus on this goal.&nbsp; The problem is that I have had to discover these various conversations happening in different guilds, conferences, associations, and academies.&nbsp; I think there is significant overlap in content among these books.&nbsp; For the sake of clarity, I have limited my list to books written by professors for an academic audience rather than popular books by pastors written for other pastors.&nbsp; I have given examples to show what I am thinking by each category.&nbsp; My hope is that identifying the current silos will help people start talking to one another. &nbsp; &nbsp;<\/p>\n<ol style=\"margin-top: 10px;margin-bottom: 10px\">\n<li><strong>constructive ecclesiologies that explain the position of one denomination or tradition.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/strong>For example, I have been drawing upon:<strong>baptist ecclesiology<\/strong>&nbsp;(<em>Towards Baptist Catholicity: Essays on Tradition and the Baptist Vision<\/em>&nbsp;by Steven R. Harmon;&nbsp;<em>Tracks and Traces: Baptist Identity in Church and Theology<\/em>&nbsp;by Paul S. Fiddes;&nbsp;<em>Free Church, Free State: The Positive Baptist Vision<\/em>&nbsp;by Nigel Wright;&nbsp;<em>On Being the Church: Revisioning Baptist Identity<\/em>&nbsp;edited by Brian Haymes, Ruth Gouldbourne, and Anthony R. Cross;&nbsp;<em>Can These Bones Live?: A Catholic Baptist Engagement with Ecclesiology, Hermeneutics, and Social Theory<\/em>&nbsp;by Barry Harvey;&nbsp;<em>Systematic Theology<\/em>&nbsp;(three volumes) by James McClendon); Very similar is<strong>&nbsp;free church ecclesiology<\/strong>&nbsp;(<em>After Our Likeness<\/em>&nbsp;by Miroslav Volf) and<strong>&nbsp;anabaptist ecclesiology<\/strong>&nbsp;(<em>Royal Priesthood<\/em>&nbsp;by John Howard Yoder).&nbsp; Someone else will want to read in their tradition:&nbsp;&nbsp;<strong>Eastern Orthodox, Roman Catholic, Lutheran, Anglican, Reformed, Wesleyan, Pentecostal\/Charismatic<\/strong>ecclesiology.&nbsp; One should also be familiar with the denomination&#8217;s polity or book of order or book of discipline. &nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><\/span> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n2.&nbsp;<span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: small;line-height: 19px\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 13px\"><strong>ecclesiological surveys&nbsp;<\/strong>(<em>An Introduction to Ecclesiology: Ecumenical, Historical &amp; Global Perspectives<\/em>&nbsp;by Veli-Matti K?rkk?inen;&nbsp;<em>Models of the Church<\/em>&nbsp;by Avery Dulles;&nbsp;<em>Household of God<\/em>&nbsp;by Lesslie Newbigin).&nbsp; All three of these books give very interesting and useful perspectives on the above range of ecclesiological perspectives.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: small\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 13px\"><\/span><\/span><font face=\"Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 19px\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: small;line-height: 19px\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 13px\"><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 13px\">3.&nbsp;<strong>evangelical ecclesiology<\/strong>&nbsp;(<em>Evangelical Ecclesiology: Reality or Illusion?<\/em>edited by John Stackhouse;&nbsp;<em>The Community Of The Word: Toward An Evangelical Ecclesiology&nbsp;<\/em>edited by Mark Husbands and Daniel J. Treier;<em>Exploring Ecclesiology: An Evangelical and Ecumenical Introduction<\/em>&nbsp;by Brad Harper and Paul Louis Metzger).&nbsp; &#8216;Evangelical&#8217; means a trans-denominational phenomenon consistent with David Bebbington&#8217;s definition (biblicism, crucicentrism, conversionism, activism).&nbsp; Thus churches from different traditions or denominations may have some things in common.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: small;line-height: 19px\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 13px\"><strong><br \/><\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size: small;line-height: 19px\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 13px\">4.&nbsp;<strong>New Testament ecclesiology<\/strong>&nbsp;(<em>Church, Ministry, and Sacraments in the New Testament<\/em>&nbsp;by C. K. Barrett;&nbsp;&nbsp;<em>A Vision for the Church: Studies in Early Christian Ecclesiology<\/em>. edited by Markus Bockmuehl&nbsp; and Michael B. Thompson;&nbsp;<em>Community Formation: in the Early Church and in the Church Today&nbsp;<\/em>edited by Richard N.
