David, or whoever this might be, exults in the defeat of his enemies and he looks to God for that victory. In fact, the whole is framed through looking to God for that victory: “You have given me…” etc.

As Goldingay puts it: YHWH acts and does not abandon; the psalmist triumphs instead of being overwhelmed; the enemy loses instead of triumphing. That’s the substance of these verses.

He speaks of slaughter, and he gives thanks to God for it. There’s no mercy here. So, what to do? Here’s Goldingay (Psalms 1): “A Christian might think that the psalm is mistaken and that Yhwh was not so involved… Or … might think that God was so involved then but is no longer so involved … might thus allegorize the psalm so that its battles refer to our battling against our own faults. Or a Christian might think that the perspective of the psalm fits the NT attitude expressed in Romans 13:4…” and all of this means the psalm can be abused but all texts suffer from that possibility.

Or perhaps this is phenomenological experience: the psalmist was victorious and thanks God and thinks God was with
