The best book I&#8217;ve seen that looks at Jesus through the lens of benefactor is F.W. Danker, <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0800620453?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0800620453\">Jesus and the New Age: A Commentary on St. Luke&#8217;s Gospel<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0800620453\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: black\">One of Jesus&#8217; closest followers was a man named Peter. Actually, his name was&nbsp;<i>Simon<\/i>, but Jesus re-named him&nbsp;<i>Cephas<\/i>, the Aramaic word for &#8220;rock&#8221; and that Aramaic name got translated into Greek and then into English as &#8220;Peter.&#8221; You could translate his name as &#8220;Rocky.&#8221; Peter was the earliest leader of the followers of Jesus after Jesus&#8217; resurrection (more on that later) so explaining Jesus fell on Peter&#8217;s shoulders.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>Once he had to reduce it all to its basics for some Gentile converts to Jesus, and Peter summed up Jesus&#8217; life in three categories:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0.75in;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: -0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Symbol;color: black\"><span>?<span style=\"font: normal normal normal 7pt\/normal 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: black\">God was with him to do good<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0.75in;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: -0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Symbol;color: black\"><span>?<span style=\"font: normal normal normal 7pt\/normal 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: black\">Injustice led to his public crucifixion<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0.75in;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: -0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Symbol;color: black\"><span>?<span style=\"font: normal normal normal 7pt\/normal 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: black\">God undid injustice when he raised Jesus from the dead<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: black\">Or,<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpFirst\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0.75in;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: -0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Symbol;color: black\"><span>?<span style=\"font: normal normal normal Benefactor<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpMiddle\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0.75in;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: black\">Jesus the Crucified<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoListParagraphCxSpLast\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0.75in;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: -0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;font-family: Symbol;color: black\"><span>?<span style=\"font: normal normal normal 7pt\/normal 'Times New Roman'\">&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: black\">Jesus the Resurrected<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: black\">Those are the basics of Jesus&#8217; life according to Peter. (You can read about this in Acts 10:24-48.) Jesus did good; Jesus was barbarically crucified; but Jesus broke the bonds of death. That&#8217;s the Story of Jesus in a nutshell. If it&#8217;s good enough for Peter, it&#8217;s good enough for us.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>We begin with this first category, Jesus the Benefactor, the one who did good to others.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: 0.5in\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: black\">When Peter reduces the Story of Jesus to its basics, he uses the special word&nbsp;<i>euergeton<\/i>, which means that Jesus was a&nbsp;<i>benefactor<\/i>, one who benefited the world in which he lived. Jesus did benefactions, good things, because &#8220;God was with him.&#8221; Here is how Peter explained it:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0.5in;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: black\">You know what has happened throughout the province of Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached&#8211;<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy<br \/>\nSpirit and power, and how he went around&nbsp;<i>doing good<\/i>&nbsp;[benefactor] and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with him (Acts 10:37-38).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: black\">The Story of Jesus is the Story of Jesus doing good because God was with him.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>As if to remind us all what Jesus was on about, Peter introduces Jesus as a benefactor by saying &#8220;You know the message God sent to the people of Israel,&nbsp;<i>announcing the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all<\/i>.&#8221; Very clear here: Jesus brings peace by doing good. Doing good produces peace. Peace flows from doing good.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;color: black\"><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>But what does it mean to say Jesus was a &#8220;benefactor&#8221;?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><font color=\"#000000\" size=\"6\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: 19px\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This series, too, emerges from a chapter I wrote that didn&#8217;t &#8220;fit&#8221; into the book, so I&#8217;m posting it this week&#8230; while we are in Ireland.
