The psalmist gives reasons to be thankful to YHWH in Psalm 16:5-11, and even if lines here were later used to affirm resurrection, for the psalmist there is a heavy emphasis on God caring about and providing for ordinary life with ordinary provisions and ordinary, daily protection. <\/p>\n

<\/div>\n
For which things the psalmist is thankful. Let us count the ways for the psalmist:<\/p>\n
<\/div>\n
1. Stability and prosperity and security (v. 5).<\/div>\n
2. Location and land (v. 6).<\/div>\n
3. YHWH’s guidance and nighttime instruction (7).<\/div>\n
4. YHWH’s presence at his side (8).<\/div>\n
5. YHWH’s promise not to abandon him to Sheol\/abyss (10).<\/div>\n
6. YHWH’s promise to make known to him the way of life (11).<\/div>\n

In the midst of this (v. 9), the psalmist bursts out in praise:<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

So my heart rejoices<\/p>\n

and I am happy;<\/p>\n

My life is safe.<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

<\/p>\n

A prayer of David.<\/p>\n

16:1<\/span> Protect me, O God, for I have taken shelter in you.<\/p>\n

16:2<\/span> I say to the Lord<\/span>, “You are the Lord,<\/p>\n

my only source of well-being.”<\/p>\n

16:3<\/span> As for God’s chosen people who are in the land,<\/p>\n

and the leading officials I admired so much –<\/p>\n

16:4<\/span> their troubles multiply,<\/p>\n

they desire other gods.<\/p>\n

I will not pour out drink offerings of blood to their gods,<\/p>\n

nor will I make vows in the name of their gods.<\/p>\n

16:5<\/span> Lord<\/span>, you give me stability and prosperity;<\/p>\n

you make my future secure.<\/p>\n

16:6<\/span> It is as if I have been given fertile fields<\/p>\n

or received a beautiful tract of land.<\/p>\n

16:7<\/span> I will praise the Lord<\/span> who guides me;<\/p>\n

yes, during the night I reflect and learn.<\/p>\n

16:8<\/span> I constantly trust in the Lord<\/span>;<\/p>\n

because he is at my right hand, I will not be upended.<\/p>\n

16:9<\/span> So my heart rejoices<\/p>\n

and I am happy;<\/p>\n

My life is safe.<\/p>\n

16:10<\/span> You will not abandon me to Sheol;<\/p>\n

you will not allow your faithful follower to see the Pit.<\/p>\n

16:11<\/span> You lead me in the path of life;<\/p>\n

I experience absolute joy in your presence;<\/p>\n
