So Psalm 14&#8217;s famous opening line: &#8220;<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Fools say to themselves, &#8220;There is no God.&#8221;&#8221; &nbsp;But there&#8217;s more to it than this.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">Both of our companions, John Goldingay&#8217;s commentary (<em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0801027039?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0801027039\">Psalms, Vol. 1: Psalms 1-41 (Baker Commentary on the Old Testament Wisdom and Psalms)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0801027039\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;and Robert Alter, <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0393337049?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0393337049\">The Book of Psalms: A Translation with Commentary<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0393337049\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/>&nbsp;,<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;translate &#8220;fools&#8221; with &#8220;scoundrels&#8221; (<i>nabal<\/i>). I&#8217;m not so sure the point is the atheist as much as the one who lives with no conviction that God is watching, who contends God will not intervene, and who believes he or she can do whatever one wants. David&#8217;s sights are on the scoffer and not the doubter; on the arrogant and not the one shaken in faith. Goldingay points us to 2 Ki 18:29-30 and Isa 14:14.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">And David does not have in mind a single person but a character in society: &#8220;<span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">They sin and commit evil deeds; none of them does what is right.&#8221; One wonders if in our culture today David would have in mind the atheist or the irreligious who don&#8217;t care. Not the one who busies herself faithfully in her job and at home; not the one is wealthy necessarily but the one who violates the Eikon of God in others, the one violates the will of others, the one who climbs over others in order to acquire what one wants. Not so much the wounded as the wounder. More like those in Genesis 6:11-12.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"psasuper\">For the music director; by David.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">14:1<\/span>&nbsp;Fools say to themselves, &#8220;There is no God.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">They sin and commit evil deeds;<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">none of them does what is right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">14:2<\/span>&nbsp;The&nbsp;<span class=\"sc\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Lord<\/span>&nbsp;looks down from heaven at the human race,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">to see if there is anyone who is wise and seeks God.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">14:3<\/span>&nbsp;Everyone rejects God;<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">they are all morally corrupt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">None of them does what is right,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">not even one!<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">14:4<\/span>&nbsp;All those who behave wickedly do not understand &#8211;<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">those who devour my people as if they were eating bread,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">and do not call out to the&nbsp;<span class=\"sc\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Lord<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">14:5<\/span>&nbsp;They are absolutely terrified,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">for God defends the godly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">14:6<\/span>&nbsp;You want to humiliate the oppressed,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">even though the&nbsp;<span class=\"sc\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Lord<\/span>&nbsp;is their shelter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">14:7<\/span>&nbsp;I wish the deliverance of Israel would come from Zion!<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">When the&nbsp;<span class=\"sc\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Lord<\/span>&nbsp;restores the well-being of his people,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">may Jacob rejoice,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">may Israel be happy!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If there is a god, and if a person knows there is a god, then to deny God is to be a fool.
