That&#8217;s the basic structure of Psalm 12 (after the jump). Let&#8217;s look at the 2d and then the 1st and then the third.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I&#8217;ve often observed, and observe here again, how much complaining about enemies goes on in the prayers of David. How much whining there is. I wonder if many pastors under the heat of opponents find the psalms of David to be comfort or at least a companion to give words to the journey?<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The problem: David&#8217;s enemies are many; the faithful are so few; the enemies use their words for deception and manipulation and to wound and to cut into pieces. All in vv. 1-4. Their arrogance completes v. 4: &#8220;Who is our master?&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The request of David is simple: &#8220;Deliver!&#8221; (v. 1). How YHWH will deliver is found in vv 3, 5: YHWH will arise, take his stand to deliver, and cut them up to counter their cutting speech.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>The theology of this psalm is profound: unlike the foul-speaking and manipulative and wounding words of the enemies &#8230;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\">\n<div>\n<p class=\"poetry\">The&nbsp;<span class=\"sc\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Lord<\/span>&#8216;s words are absolutely reliable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">They are as untainted as silver purified in a furnace on the ground,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">where it is thoroughly refined.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Because YHWH&#8217;s words are reliable because they&#8217;ve been tested to the limit. As our companion [John Goldingay&#8217;s commentary (<em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0801027039?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0801027039\">Psalms, Vol. 1: Psalms 1-41 (Baker Commentary on the Old Testament Wisdom and Psalms)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0801027039\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><\/strong><\/em>] describes it, they&#8217;ve been tried in the divine council and now come forth with utter truthfulness.<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"Times\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">YHWH&#8217;s words are true, so he will cut into the falsehoods of David&#8217;s enemies.<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"psasuper\">For the music director; according to the&nbsp;<i>sheminith<\/i>&nbsp;style; a psalm of David.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">12:1<\/span>&nbsp;Deliver,&nbsp;<span class=\"sc\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Lord<\/span>!<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">For the godly have disappeared;<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">people of integrity have vanished.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">12:2<\/span>&nbsp;People lie to one another;<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">they flatter and deceive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">12:3<\/span>&nbsp;May the&nbsp;<span class=\"sc\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Lord<\/span>&nbsp;cut off all flattering lips,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">and the tongue that boasts!<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">12:4<\/span>&nbsp;They say, &#8220;We speak persuasively;<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">we know how to flatter and boast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">Who is our master?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">12:5<\/span>&nbsp;&#8220;Because of the violence done to the oppressed,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">because of the painful cries of the needy,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">I will spring into action,&#8221; says the&nbsp;<span class=\"sc\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Lord<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">&#8220;I will provide the safety they so desperately desire.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">12:6<\/span>&nbsp;The&nbsp;<span class=\"sc\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Lord<\/span>&#8216;s words are absolutely reliable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">They are as untainted as silver purified in a furnace on the ground,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">where it is thoroughly refined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">12:7<\/span>&nbsp;You,&nbsp;<span class=\"sc\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, will protect them;<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">you will continually shelter each one from these evil people,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">12:8<\/span>&nbsp;for the wicked seem to be everywhere,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">when people promote evil.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First the request and then the problem and then the theology.
