{"id":6195,"date":"2009-11-17T12:11:44","date_gmt":"2009-11-17T12:11:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jesuscreed\/2009\/11\/acts-and-mission-62.html"},"modified":"2009-11-17T12:11:44","modified_gmt":"2009-11-17T12:11:44","slug":"acts-and-mission-62","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jesuscreed\/2009\/11\/acts-and-mission-62.html","title":{"rendered":"Acts and Mission 62"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"JerusTem.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/120\/import\/imgs\/JerusTem.jpg\" width=\"471\" height=\"225\" class=\"mt-image-center\" style=\"text-align: center;margin: 0 auto 20px\" \/><\/span>Jerusalem remained at that time the center of God&#8217;s people and that meant also the central city for the Church, the people of Messiah Jesus.&nbsp;This is the context for the next passage, a passage for which we need to give thanks and about which we need to be sorry:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p>1<span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">5:36<\/span>&nbsp;After some days Paul said to Barnabas, &#8220;Let&#8217;s return and visit the brothers in every town where we proclaimed the word of the Lord to see how they are doing.&#8221;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">15:37<\/span>&nbsp;Barnabas wanted to bring John called Mark along with them too,&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">15:38<\/span>&nbsp;but Paul insisted that they should not take along this one who had left them in Pamphylia and had not accompanied them in the work.&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">15:39<\/span>&nbsp;They had a sharp disagreement, so that they parted company. Barnabas took along Mark and sailed away to Cyprus,&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">15:40<\/span>&nbsp;but Paul chose Silas and set out, commended to the grace of the Lord by the brothers and sisters.&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">15:41<\/span>&nbsp;He passed through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>We cannot be sure what it was about John Mark that concerned Paul the most &#8212; probably his defection in the mission &#8212; but that&#8217;s not the issue. For me the issue is that we have two major leaders, Barnabas and Paul, two ish elohim (man of God), two whom God had used in God&#8217;s mission, but who now couldn&#8217;t agree and so went their separate ways.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>There is a touch of sectarianism perhaps here: Luke tells us that the Church at Antioch commended Paul and Silas but no such word is said of Barnabas and John Mark. Perhaps we should not read into this.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Silence may be golden. What we know is that Luke favors the Pauline mission and he tells that story.
