Does this chapter create two kinds of Christians &#8212; Jewish and Gentile? Or does this chapter create a temporary expedient &#8212; some basic laws need to be followed by Gentiles until later in the Church? Here we go.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">15:1<\/span>&nbsp;Now some men came down from Judea and began to teach the brothers, &#8220;Unless you are circumcised according to the custom of Moses, you cannot be saved.&#8221;&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">15:2<\/span>When Paul and Barnabas had a major argument and debate with them, the church appointed Paul and Barnabas and some others from among them to go up to meet with the apostles and elders in Jerusalem about this point of disagreement.&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">15:3<\/span>&nbsp;So they were sent on their way by the church, and as they passed through both Phoenicia and Samaria, they were relating at length the conversion of the Gentiles and bringing great joy to all the brothers.&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">15:4<\/span>&nbsp;When they arrived in Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders, and they reported all the things God had done with them.&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">15:5<\/span>&nbsp;But some from the religious party of the Pharisees who had believed stood up and said, &#8220;It is necessary to circumcise the Gentiles and to order them to observe the law of Moses.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">No one should want to have problems, but problems often provoke thinking and resolutions. This is such an incident, so let&#8217;s get the problem clear.<\/span><\/font> And we are reading Beverly Gaventa&#8217;s commentary on Acts: <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/068705821X?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=068705821X\">The Acts of the Apostles (Abingdon New Testament Commentaries)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=068705821X\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>.<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>First, the folks coming down from Jerusalem to Antioch were Jewish (believers) who believed that one had to be circumcised &#8212; follow the whole Torah &#8212; in order to be saved.<\/div>\n<div>Second, Paul disagrees: Gentile Christians do not have to follow the Torah, ie get circumcised, in order to be saved. Paul believed one was saved by faith &#8212; Gentile and Jew. The Torah does not save.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div>Third, the leaders in Antioch send Paul and Barnabas to meet with the leaders in Jerusalem to work this out.<\/div>\n<div>Fourth, en route Paul tells reports of Gentile belief.<\/div>\n<div>Fifth, when Paul gets to Jerusalem he is welcomed but some Pharisee &#8212; of such was\/is Paul &#8212; say the new Gentile believers must embrace the whole Torah and must be circumcised.&nbsp;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In other words: to become a follower of Jesus, the Jewish Messiah, all followers must accept the Torah &#8212; be proselytes and in effect become Jews.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Paul says &#8220;No.&#8221; The Pharisees say &#8220;Yes.&#8221;<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Acts 15 is a watershed in earliest Christianty &#8212; even if it interrupts the flow of the gospel and mission of God in the Book of Acts, and how you read this chapter affects everything about how you read the rest of the New Testament.
