It seems like missional is the newest model on the shelf for pragmatic evangelicals to buy and consume and self-apply. Missional is doing for younger evangelicals what Neo-Evangelicalism did for the last generation.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-align: justify\"><span style=\"font-family: Helvetica\">&nbsp;I had someone share this sentiment with me over a conversation on the the importance of the missional church. Perhaps as you look at this booklet [and read this post] you&#8217;re saying to yourself something similar,&nbsp;<i>&#8220;the missional church is just the latest buzzword,&#8221;<\/i><span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><i>&#8220;the missional church is a pragmatic theologically light version of the church,&#8221;<\/i>&nbsp;etc.. If these things were true then why in the world should any group of Christians &#8211; small or large &#8211; spend time exploring what the missional church is? The honest answer is they shouldn&#8217;t. If the missional church is just the latest fad in the church then its not worth our time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;text-align: justify\"><font face=\"Helvetica, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><b>The essence of the missional church in the West is to recognize a change of conditions: from the Christian West to the Post-Christian West. What is the biggest evidence for this in your opinion? Where do you most feel the Post-Christian condition?<\/b><\/font><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><font face=\"Helvetica, helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><br \/><\/font><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-family:Helvetica\">What I hope you&#8217;ll experience in these posts over the next few weeks is that the missional church<br \/>\nconversation happening all over the Western church represents not the latest<br \/>\ngrowth theory taken from popular culture <b>but rather a deeply theological and<br \/>\nculturally thoughtful exploration of the biblical and historical nature of the<br \/>\nchurch<\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-family:Helvetica\">What is the missional church? The missional<br \/>\nchurch is a ecclesial expression of a new <i>situational <\/i>awareness<br \/>\nChristians the in West are having as the church continues to decline and revert<br \/>\nto its original marginal character in our global pluralistic world<i>.<\/i> The<br \/>\nmissional church is the overflow of fresh considerations <b>regarding the nature<br \/>\nof God as one who sends<\/b>.<i> <\/i>The missional church also represents a shift in<br \/>\nhow mission is viewed: no longer as a geographical movement from a<br \/>\nChristianized West to a paganized East.<i> <\/i>Lastly, the missional church is<br \/>\na revived understanding of the church as sent rather than just sending.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align: center\"><span style=\"font-family:Helvetica\">&nbsp;<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">The Situational Shift<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-family:Helvetica\">&nbsp;What is the missional church? The answer to<br \/>\nthis question can be found in the experience of a single 20th century<br \/>\nmissionary. <b>Lesslie Newbigin<\/b>. Tim Keller in one of the most popular articles on<br \/>\nthe subject called, <u>The Missional Church<\/u>, shares the situational shift<br \/>\nNewbigin experienced;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:28.0pt\"><i><span style=\"font-family:Helvetica;color:black\">&#8220;The British missionary<br \/>\nLesslie Newbigin went to India around 1950.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>There he was involved with a church living &#8216;in mission&#8217; in a<br \/>\nvery non-Christian culture. When he returned to England some 30 years later, he<br \/>\ndiscovered that now the Western church too existed in a non-Christian society,<br \/>\nbut it had not adapted to its new situation. Though public institutions and<br \/>\npopular culture of Europe and North America no longer &#8216;Christianized&#8217; people,<br \/>\nthe church still ran its ministries assuming that a stream of &#8216;Christianized&#8217;,<br \/>\ntraditional\/moral people would simply show up in services.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Some churches certainly did<br \/>\n&#8216;evangelism&#8217; as one ministry among many. But the church in the West had not<br \/>\nbecome completely &#8216;missional&#8217;&#8211;adapting and reformulating absolutely everything<br \/>\nit did in worship, discipleship, community, and service&#8211;so as to be engaged<br \/>\nwith the non-Christian society around it.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>It had not developed a &#8216;missiology of western culture&#8217; the way it had<br \/>\ndone so for other non-believing cultures.&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-family:Helvetica;color:black\">Tim Keller, <u>The<br \/>\nMissional Church<\/u><i><\/i><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-family:Helvetica\">&nbsp;Newbigin was not the first missionary to return<br \/>\nhome to the West to find that the West was not the Christendom society he had<br \/>\nleft, but he was the one whose clarity of vision and missiological profundity<br \/>\nhelped raise the issue in a way that captured the attention of Western ministry<br \/>\npractitioners.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-align:justify\"><span style=\"font-family:Helvetica\">The missional church is not a cliche &#8230;. here today and gone tomorrow, because the <i>situational<\/i> <i>shift<\/i><br \/>\nit comes from &#8211; <b>the shift from a Christian to a Post-Christian setting for the<br \/>\nchurch in the West<\/b> &#8211; has brought about a lasting dynamic that will shape and<br \/>\ninform how Christians speak of the mission and nature of the church. Darrell L.<br \/>\nGuder, editor of perhaps the most well known work on the topic called <u>The<br \/>\nMissional Church<\/u>, sets up the problem facing the Church in the Western<br \/>\nworld today;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-left:28.0pt;text-align:justify\"><i><span style=\"font-family:Helvetica\">&#8220;Rather than occupying a central and<br \/>\ninfluential place, North American Christian churches are increasingly marginalized,<br \/>\nso much so that in our urban areas they represent a minority movement.
