Acts 13:4-12 clarifies what that work is:<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">13:4<\/span>&nbsp;So Barnabas and Saul, sent out by the Holy Spirit, went down to Seleucia, and from there they sailed to Cyprus.&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">13:5<\/span>&nbsp;When they arrived in Salamis, they began to proclaim the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. (Now they also had John as their assistant.)&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">13:6<\/span>&nbsp;When they had crossed over the whole island as far as Paphos, they found a magician, a Jewish false prophet named Bar-Jesus,&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">13:7<\/span>&nbsp;who was with the proconsul Sergius Paulus, an intelligent man. The proconsul summoned Barnabas and Saul and wanted to hear the word of God.&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">13:8<\/span>&nbsp;But the magician Elymas (for that is the way his name is translated) opposed them, trying to turn the proconsul away from the faith.<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">13:9<\/span>&nbsp;But Saul (also known as Paul), filled with the Holy Spirit, stared straight at him&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">13:10<\/span>&nbsp;and said, &#8220;You who are full of all deceit and all wrongdoing, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness &#8211; will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">13:11<\/span>&nbsp;Now look, the hand of the Lord is against you, and you will be blind, unable to see the sun for a time!&#8221; Immediately mistiness and darkness came over him, and he went around seeking people to lead him by the hand.&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">13:12<\/span>&nbsp;Then when the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, because he was greatly astounded at the teaching about the Lord.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">They are to proclaim the word of God in Jewish synagogues, and they do this on the island of Cyprus &#8212; across the whole. In this process of preaching the word in synagogues and gospeling, they encounter a magician, a Jewish false-prophet named Bar-Jesus (son of Yeshua). Again, we are using Beverly Gaventa&#8217;s <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/068705821X?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=068705821X\">The Acts of the Apostles (Abingdon New Testament Commentaries)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=068705821X\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A proconsul named Sergius wants to meet with Saul, also known as Paul (13:9!), to hear the word of God but the magician Elymas, who reminds of Simon in Acts 8, attempts to dissuade them. Here is how Paul responds to the magician:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">But Saul (also known as Paul), filled with the Holy Spirit, stared straight at him&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">13:10<\/span>&nbsp;and said, &#8220;You who are full of all deceit and all wrongdoing, you son of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness &#8211; will you not stop making crooked the straight paths of the Lord?&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">13:11<\/span>&nbsp;Now look, the hand of the Lord is against you, and you will be blind, unable to see the sun for a time!&#8221; Immediately mistiness and darkness came over him, and he went around seeking people to lead him by the hand.&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">13:12<\/span>&nbsp;Then when the proconsul saw what had happened, he believed, because he was greatly astounded at the teaching about the Lord.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">The gospel spills out from synagogues into the public realm; in fact, into the upper levels of the political realm on Cyprus to Sergius Paulus, who seems a bit like the Ethiopian eunuch who stands in contrast to someone who opposes the gospel.&nbsp;<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">The gospel is opposed by spiritual forces.<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Paul, directed to the work by the Spirit and now filled with the Spirit, addresses the man in power and with miracle. This event reminds of Ananias and Sapphira &#8230; and the proconsul believes.
