{"id":5991,"date":"2009-10-14T11:36:10","date_gmt":"2009-10-14T11:36:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jesuscreed\/2009\/10\/acts-and-mission-43.html"},"modified":"2009-10-14T11:36:10","modified_gmt":"2009-10-14T11:36:10","slug":"acts-and-mission-43","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jesuscreed\/2009\/10\/acts-and-mission-43.html","title":{"rendered":"Acts and Mission 43"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Paul.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/120\/import\/imgs\/Paul.jpg\" width=\"251\" height=\"251\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"float: right;margin: 0 0 20px 20px\" \/><\/span>The center of the messianic movement was Jerusalem, and this is clearly seen in our text from Acts 11:<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">11:22<\/span>&nbsp;A report about them came to the attention of the church in Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch.&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">11:23<\/span>&nbsp;When he came and saw the grace of God, he rejoiced and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with devoted hearts,&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">11:24<\/span>&nbsp;because he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith, and a significant number of people were brought to the Lord.&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">11:25<\/span>&nbsp;Then Barnabas departed for Tarsus to look for Saul,&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">11:26<\/span>&nbsp;and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught a significant number of people. Now it was in Antioch that the disciples were first called Christians.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nBut the center of the movement was shaped by a certain kind of leader. Barnabas was &#8220;a&nbsp;<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith.&#8221; Barnabas, a leader in Jerusalem, is sent to inspect and evaluated the work of God in Antioch. What he sees is the &#8220;grace of God&#8221; &#8212; manifestations of God&#8217;s gracious redemptive work in Antioch.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Barnabas evidently think he needs help, so he finds the apostle Saul (Paul) and they both spend a year in Antioch teaching the gospel.<\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/div>\n<div><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">Luke adds a touch: it was in Antioch that the first followers of Jesus were called Christians. Is this name (as Gaventa suggests: <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/068705821X?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=068705821X\">The Acts of the Apostles (Abingdon New Testament Commentaries)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=068705821X\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>) used because there are now two social groups &#8212; messianic Jews and Gentiles &#8212; and a term of unity is needed?
