But in his wake came Barnabas and Saul (aka, Paul):<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">11:19<\/span>&nbsp;Now those who had been scattered because of the persecution that took place over Stephen went as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the message to no one but Jews.&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">11:20<\/span>&nbsp;But there were some men from Cyprus and Cyrene among them who came to Antioch and began to speak to the Greeks too, proclaiming the good news of the Lord Jesus.&nbsp;<span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">11:21<\/span>&nbsp;The hand of the Lord was with them, and a great number who believed turned to the Lord.&nbsp;<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"webkit-indent-blockquote\"><p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\"><br \/><\/span><\/font><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><font color=\"#000000\" face=\"'Times New Roman', helvetica, hirakakupro-w3, osaka, 'ms pgothic', sans-serif\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-size: medium\">A good sketch of this passage can be found in Bev Gaventa&#8217;s&nbsp;<em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/068705821X?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=068705821X\">The Acts of the Apostles (Abingdon New Testament Commentaries)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=068705821X\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>.<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nMissionally: persecution prompts missional expansion. The persecution under Stephen scattered Christians (messianic Jews) and where they went they told other Jews about Jesus. But some of these messianic Jews began to tell Gentiles the good news too.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Their good news was about the &#8220;Lord&#8221; Jesus &#8212; a backward glance at the crucial role the resurrection and ascension played in the gospel: the one was raised was exalted to be Lord (and Messiah), Lord over all the world. But the Gentiles hear more about Jesus&#8217; Lordship than his Messiah-hood. Is this an indication of a Gentile-shaped gospel? (See Gaventa, 179.)<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>God anointed their preaching and many were converted.
