John Goldingay (<em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0801027039?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0801027039\">Psalms, Vol. 1: Psalms 1-41<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0801027039\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>) explores this in his commentary on Psalm 3 [text after the jump].<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In the midst of despair and denunciation by one&#8217;s enemies, David tells God what he is hearing and then makes a rock-solid confession on the basis of what he has experienced with God&#8217;s protection: &#8220;<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">But you,&nbsp;<\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"sc\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Lord<\/span><\/span><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">, are a shield that protects me;&nbsp;you are my glory and the one who restores me&nbsp;[or, lifts up my head; cf. 27:6; 82:3; 110:7]<span class=\"Apple-style-span\">&nbsp;.&#8221; God is shield from the enemies; God is the one who restores, or how lifts David&#8217;s head. David cries out to God, David experiences God&#8217;s protection, and David is not afraid of an army of enemies because he knows what God has done. God&#8217;s answer means David can sleep through the night. Not only can he sleep, he knows from experience that God protects from a large band of enemies.&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\">So David concludes: God delivers; that means God will bless and make his people flourish. Perhaps the psalmist moves from people to individual: Because God blesses Israel, God will bless the psalmist.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><span class=\"Apple-style-span\"><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">3:1<\/span>&nbsp;<span class=\"sc\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, how numerous are my enemies!<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">Many attack me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">3:2<\/span>&nbsp;Many say about me,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">&#8220;God will not deliver him.&#8221; (Selah)<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">3:3<\/span>&nbsp;But you,&nbsp;<span class=\"sc\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Lord<\/span>, are a shield that protects me;<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">you are my glory and the one who restores me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\"><span class=\"vref\" style=\"font-weight: bold\">3:4<\/span>&nbsp;To the&nbsp;<span class=\"sc\" style=\"font-variant: small-caps\">Lord<\/span>&nbsp;I cried out,<\/p>\n<p class=\"poetry\">and he answered me from his holy hill.
