Let us take Pentecost as a paradigm of what happens when the Spirit comes down, when God&#8217;s Spirit sways God&#8217;s People to be and do as they are supposed to, and I can&#8217;t see that assumption is anything but reasonable. What happens? Acts 2:42-27 tells us.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><i>They devoted themselves to the apostles&#8217; teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common. Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need. Every<br \/>\nday they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke<br \/>\nbread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.<\/i><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Those who have been with Jesus, like the Twelve, were joined now by those who responded to Peter&#8217;s Pentecostal sermon and the Spirit&#8217;s powerful moving &#8212; they repented and they got baptized and then they&#8230; <\/p>\n<blockquote><\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<br \/>As Beverly Gaventa says it so economically, &#8220;it is a community, not merely an aggregation of autonomous individuals&#8221; (81, in <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/068705821X?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=068705821X\">The Acts of the Apostles (Abingdon New Testament Commentaries)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=068705821X\" alt=\"\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important;margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>). As she also points out, and this not often emphasized in some circles, the language of this passage reflects the language of friendship in the Greco-Roman world.<\/p>\n<p>But let us not forget that this isn&#8217;t just a bunch of people resolutely committed to one another through thick or thin, but instead this community is the result of the work of God &#8212; when God is truly at work community is formed.<\/p>\n<p>The expression that brings this out the most is &#8220;All the believers were together.&#8221; Everything else emerges from being together as spiritual friends.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>What happens when Pentecost happens?
