The dinner guests were
\nsitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to explain
\nthe problem with education. <\/span><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

He argued, ‘What’s a kid
\ngoing to learn from someone who decided his best option in life was to become a
\nteacher?’ <\/span><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

He reminded the other
\ndinner guests what they say about teachers: ‘Those who can, do. Those who
\ncan’t, teach.’ <\/span><\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

To emphasize his point he
\nsaid to another guest; ‘You’re a teacher, Bonnie. Be honest. What do you make?’
\n<\/span><\/font><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Bonnie, who had a
\nreputation for honesty and frankness replied, ‘You want to know what I make? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(She paused for a second,
\nthen began…) <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

‘Well, I make kids work
\nharder than they ever thought they could. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I make a C+ feel like the
\nCongressional Medal of Honor. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I make kids sit through 40
\nminutes of class time when their parents can’t make them sit for 5 without an I
\nPod, Game Cube or movie rental. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

You want to know what I
\nmake?’ (She paused again and looked at each and every person at the table.) <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

”I make kids wonder. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I make them question. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I make them apologize and
\nmean it. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I make them have respect
\nand take responsibility for their actions. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I teach them to write and
\nthen I make them write. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Keyboarding isn’t
\neverything. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I make them read, read,
\nread. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I make them show all their
\nwork in math. They use their God-given brain, not the man-made calculator. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I make my students from
\nother countries learn everything they need to know in English while preserving
\ntheir unique cultural identity. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I make my classroom a place
\nwhere all my students feel safe. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I make my students stand,
\nplacing their hand over their heart to say the Pledge of Allegiance to the
\nFlag, One Nation Under God, because we live in the United States of America . <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I make them understand that
\nif they use the gifts they were given, work hard, and follow their hearts, they
\ncan succeed in life.’ <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

(Bonnie paused one last
\ntime and then continued.) <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

‘Then, when people try to
\njudge me by what I make, with me knowing money isn’t everything, I can hold my
\nhead up high and pay no attention because they are ignorant… <\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/p>\n

You want to know what I
\nmake? <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

I MAKE A DIFFERENCE. What
\ndo you make Mr. CEO?’ <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

His jaw dropped, he went
\nsilent. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
