I&#8217;ve added the book on introverts below and Jim Belcher&#8217;s book.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<div><b><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: normal\"><br \/><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<div><b><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"font-weight: normal\">There are some books that have come across my desk this year that deserve special honor, so I want to award some books and authors for the singular contribution. This is not a widespread scan of all books nor even of books on the topics of the books I award. No, this is simply a recognition that these are the best books that came my way this year. Some of these I blogged about extensively and others I either barely mentioned or mentioned only in passing.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>I begin with Bible and then branch out.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Undoubtedly, the best new reference set of books this year is the fantastic new set of Old Testament commentaries in light of historical context, a set edited by John Walton: <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0310255724?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0310255724\">Zondervan Illustrated Bible Backgrounds Commentary Set: Old Testament<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0310255724\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p>Alongside John&#8217;s edited work, I have to say that his little student-level book on Genesis One: <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0830837043?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0830837043\">The Lost World of Genesis One: Ancient Cosmology and the Origins Debate<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0830837043\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>. This book is an important landmark study of evangelical Christians, paving the way for a more responsible use of science in matters pertaining to Genesis 1. So, I want to give John Walton two hat tips this year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>When it comes to New Testament books, I nominate the massive and soon-to-be-discussed book by Douglas Campbell, <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0802831265?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0802831265\">The Deliverance of God: An Apocalyptic Rereading of Justification in Paul<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0802831265\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>.<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>For Church history, a book that will do double-duty for college classes and for churches, I have to give a big push to Chris Armstrong&#8217;s splendid <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0830837191?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0830837191\">Patron Saints for Postmoderns: Ten from the Past Who Speak to Our Future<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0830837191\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>But for an introduction to early theology, IVP is to be congratulated for the wonderful new set of books called Ancient Christian Doctrine, and I link to just the first volume.&nbsp;<em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0830825312?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0830825312\">We Believe in One God (Ancient Christian Doctrine)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0830825312\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>&nbsp;Splendid, splendid, splendid!<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>On the &#8220;doctrine of Scripture,&#8221; an incredibly suggestive and enlightening study by Jewish scholar, Michael Fishbane, really impressed me: <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0226251713?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0226251713\">Sacred Attunement: A Jewish Theology<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0226251713\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p> For books on history, I can&#8217;t think of a better study this year than the new one by Gary Anderson on sin: <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0300149891?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0300149891\">Sin: A History<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0300149891\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>. This book may not satisfy Protestants, but it is one serious piece of history written up in splendid prose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>A wonderful church book is by Miriam Neff: That book is Miriam Neff&#8217;s <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/080248784X?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=080248784X\">From One Widow to Another: Conversations on the New You<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=080248784X\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/em>, a book that is a must for all those ministering to widows.&nbsp;And I&#8217;ve just added this: <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0830837027?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0830837027\">Introverts in the Church: Finding Our Place in an Extroverted Culture<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0830837027\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>My Third Way book of the year is by Adam Hamilton, <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0687649692?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0687649692\">Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White: Thoughts on Religion, Morality, and Politics<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0687649692\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>. I thought I could restrict this category to one book, but Jim Belcher&#8217;s book is a must read too: <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0830837167?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0830837167\">Deep Church: A Third Way Beyond Emerging and Traditional<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0830837167\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>For memoirs, the deeply moving and gut-wrenching &#8212; if not critical &#8212; study by Hala Jaber, <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/1594488673?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=1594488673\">The Flying Carpet of Small Miracles: A Woman&#8217;s Fight to Save Two Orphans<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=1594488673\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>, gets my #1 pick.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I posted this last week, but want to post it again for those who have not yet seen it.
