Today we look at the Gospel of Luke, but before I do that I must announce that volume two of Jimmy Dunn&#8217;s magisterial work on the beginnigs of Christianity is now available: <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0802839320?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0802839320\">Beginning from Jerusalem (Christianity in the Making, vol. 2)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0802839320\" alt=\"\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important;margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/>. <\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>OK, now to Luke.<\/p>\n<p>When I have a question about a passage in Luke, I begin with:<\/p>\n<p>Joel Green, <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0802823157?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0802823157\">The Gospel of Luke (New International Commentary on the New Testament)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0802823157\" alt=\"\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important;margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>. It combines wide-ranging reading, a narrative approach, and readable prose.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, the second one I consult is Darrell Bock. These two scholars are my contemporaries and friends and have been involved in Lukan studies their entire careers. Darrell&#8217;s is two volumes: <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0801010519?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0801010519\">Luke (2 vols.) (Baker Exegetical Commentary on the New Testament)<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0801010519\" alt=\"\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important;margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Then I go to John Nolland, for whom two volumes was not enough. There are three volumes in his commentary. Now a word for the wise: serious exegesis of this Gospel, which is 24 long chapters, can&#8217;t be done adequately in short compass. Thus, I don&#8217;t complain about length. Nolland: <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0849902347?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0849902347\">Word Biblical Commentary Vol. 35a, Luke 1:1-9:20<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0849902347\" alt=\"\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important;margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Then I go to J.
