{"id":4595,"date":"2008-11-19T13:00:16","date_gmt":"2008-11-19T13:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jesuscreed\/2008\/11\/books-on-ethics-top-5.html"},"modified":"2008-11-19T13:00:16","modified_gmt":"2008-11-19T13:00:16","slug":"books-on-ethics-top-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jesuscreed\/2008\/11\/books-on-ethics-top-5.html","title":{"rendered":"Books on Ethics: Top 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I was recently asked what my top five books on Christian ethics would be &#8230; well, without parameters I thought I&#8217;d give five that span the spectrum.<\/p>\n<p>A good anabaptist approach, written for an upper level college student, graduate student or seminary student, is Stanley Hauerwas, <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0334029333?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0334029333\">The Peaceable Kingdom: A Primer in Christian Ethics<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0334029333\" alt=\"\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important;margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong> .<\/p>\n<p>My favorite anabaptist study of ethics, focusing on the non-violent message and vision of Jesus, is John Howard Yoder, <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0802807348?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0802807348\">The Politics of Jesus<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0802807348\" alt=\"\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important;margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>David Gill, a former colleague at North Park, has a two-volume set that is evangelical and introductory &#8212; a good college level textbook and I like to the first one: <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0830822720?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0830822720\">Becoming Good: Building Moral Character<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0830822720\" alt=\"\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important;margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A nice more mainline approach to ethics is Phillip Wogaman, <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/0664251633?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=390957&amp;creativeASIN=0664251633\">Christian Ethics: A Historical Introduction<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=as2&amp;o=1&amp;a=0664251633\" alt=\"\" style=\"border: medium none  ! important;margin: 0px ! important\" border=\"0\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" \/><br \/>\n<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>And to add some perspective to how we Christians do morals, reading a Jewish perspective is very helpful. So I recommend Eugene Borowitz, F.W.
