{"id":4194,"date":"2009-01-27T13:00:50","date_gmt":"2009-01-27T13:00:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jesuscreed\/2009\/01\/midday-bible-study-gospel-62.html"},"modified":"2009-01-27T13:00:50","modified_gmt":"2009-01-27T13:00:50","slug":"midday-bible-study-gospel-62","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jesuscreed\/2009\/01\/midday-bible-study-gospel-62.html","title":{"rendered":"Midday Bible Study: Gospel 62"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Peter says something in chp 4 about the gospel that has perplexed many for centuries:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p> <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=1Pe&amp;c=4&amp;v=1&amp;t=NIVP#\">6<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>For<br \/>\nthis is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now<br \/>\ndead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the<br \/>\nbody, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The NIV adds the word &#8220;now&#8221; before dead to clarify. The NRSV has just &#8220;the dead.&#8221; Which is the problem: Who are they? Three options: (1) those who were preached to after Jesus&#8217; death who were in prison (1 Pet 3:18), (2) the spiritually dead who are now alive in Christ, and (3) those who were alive, heard the gospel, but are now dead. This third option seems the most persuasive to most commentators.<\/p>\n<p>The big point here involves these observations:<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<br \/><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Wesley.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/120\/import\/imgs\/Wesley.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-right\" style=\"margin: 0pt 0pt 20px 20px;float: right\" height=\"276\" width=\"210\" \/><\/span>First, that gospel preaching must be preached to all as the great Wesley did.<\/p>\n<p>Second, that humans are accountable to God and gospel preaching &#8220;in the body&#8221; (during our earthly life) correlates with what happens in the new heavens and new earth (in the spirit).<\/p>\n<p>Third, that gospel preaching judges sin.<\/p>\n<p>Fourth, that a positive response to gospel preaching leads to life before God.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Peter says something in chp 4 about the gospel that has perplexed many for centuries: 6&nbsp;For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":70,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4194","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-gospel"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
