{"id":4193,"date":"2009-01-26T13:00:06","date_gmt":"2009-01-26T13:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jesuscreed\/2009\/01\/midday-bible-study-gospel-61.html"},"modified":"2009-01-26T13:00:06","modified_gmt":"2009-01-26T13:00:06","slug":"midday-bible-study-gospel-61","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jesuscreed\/2009\/01\/midday-bible-study-gospel-61.html","title":{"rendered":"Midday Bible Study: Gospel 61"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We continue in our series of the meaning of the word &#8220;gospel&#8221; in the New Testament with how Peter uses &#8220;gospel.&#8221; Today we look 1 Peter 1:25.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=1Pe&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#\">22<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>Now<br \/>\nthat you have purified yourselves <b>by obeying the truth<\/b> so that you have<br \/>\nsincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the<br \/>\nheart.&nbsp;<a class=\"ftnt\" name=\"fnt_2\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=1Pe&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_2\"><\/a>  <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=1Pe&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#\">23<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=1Pe&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#\">24<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>For,<\/p>\n<p class=\"Poetry1\">&#8220;All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall,<span class=\"VerseNum\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=1Pe&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#\">25<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>but the word of the Lord stands forever.&#8221;<a class=\"ftnt\" name=\"fnt_3\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=1Pe&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_3\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"ParagraphCont\">&nbsp;<b>And this is the word that was preached [gospeled] to you<\/b>.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n&nbsp;There is so much in 1 Peter chp 1: there is the anticipation of salvation in the prophets and its arrival in Christ; there is the summons to holiness that is rooted in God&#8217;s utter holiness and in God&#8217;s redemptive ways &#8212; and he redeemed through the blood of Christ. And this redemption was to create a holy people and a loving people. This Christ was not only crucified; he was raised from the dead.<\/p>\n<p>The gospel involves preaching of the word; this word creates the new birth. And Peter quotes from the book of Isaiah, chp 40, to affirm the eternal nature of God&#8217;s word.<\/p>\n<p>And then Peter simply says that it was &#8220;this&#8221; word that was &#8220;evangelized\/gospeled&#8221; to you. Peter and Paul are on the same page: gospel involves Jesus &#8212; died and raised &#8212; and redemption in him in order to create a holy, loving people.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We continue in our series of the meaning of the word &#8220;gospel&#8221;
