Enough already.<\/p>\n<p>As you look down this wintry road toward Lent, I suggest that you take a good look at <a href=\"http:\/\/godspace.wordpress.com\/2008\/01\/15\/make-lent-matter\/\">Christine Sine&#8217;s Lenten guide<\/a> &#8212; and I, too, will have something to announce about Lent shortly.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"NextWave1.jpg\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/imgs\/NextWave1.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"margin: 0pt 20px 20px 0pt;float: left\" height=\"264\" width=\"200\" \/><\/span>Stephen Shields has put the emerging church conversation together very well. I suspect this piece at Next Wave may well prove to be a pivotal piece in the next few years &#8212; it is a broadly-based, if all white male, perspective on what has happened and what could happen to the emerging movement. <\/p>\n<p>An extensive study of Mark Driscoll by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/01\/11\/magazine\/11punk-t.html?pagewanted=1&amp;_r=1&amp;ref=magazine\">Molly Worthen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Carolyn Custis James, an author, is part of an organization for women and men working together in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.synergytoday.org\/conferences.html\">Blessed Alliance<\/a>, and they have a conference coming up this March in Florida &#8212; check it out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=f2b1D5w82yU\">Dan Kimball&#8217;s latest hit<\/a> &#8212; and I hear Dan likes the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theonion.com\/content\/video\/apple_introduces_revolutionary\">Apple Wheel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s your favorite line <a href=\"http:\/\/karenzach.wordpress.com\/2009\/01\/13\/saving-a-chicken\/\">in this story<\/a>? As is always the case, David is on to something here but I need to see how &#8220;missiology&#8221; is defined before I can climb on board with him. But, <a href=\"http:\/\/addenda-errata.ivpress.com\/2010\/01\/that_old_bookcase_backdrop.php\">Dan<\/a>, some of us would prefer that the observer be distracted to the shelves! <a href=\"http:\/\/erika.haub.net\/why-church\/01\/\">Erika<\/a> has a good question and some good conversation. Kyle Strobel reflects on the <a href=\"http:\/\/theologyforum.wordpress.com\/2009\/01\/13\/the-seven-deadly-spiritual-sins\/\">seven deadly sins for theologians<\/a>. A <a href=\"http:\/\/tallskinnykiwi.typepad.com\/tallskinnykiwi\/2009\/01\/on-being-prepared-for-worship-experiences.html\">vintage blogger<\/a> with the sort of thing that blogs alone can do. <a href=\"http:\/\/vanguardchurch.blogspot.com\/2009\/01\/missional-community-flowchart-for.html\">Bob Robinson&#8217;s flow chart <\/a>on missional churches. I totally agree with <a href=\"http:\/\/daddyroblog.blogs.com\/daddyroblog\/2009\/01\/following-the-simple-way.html\">Fr. Rob<\/a>.&nbsp; <a href=\"http:\/\/brokenstainedglass.typepad.com\/broken_stained_glass\/2009\/01\/rethinking-the-christian-approach-to-hell.html\">J.R. gets salty<\/a> about what many say about hell. Spirituality, children and a reflection by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elementalcm.com\/2009\/01\/16\/new-study-about-spirituality-vs-religion-and-children\/\">Henry Zonio<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This is where we are today and we need to concentrate on it more (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.barna.org\/FlexPage.aspx?Page=BarnaUpdateNarrowPreview&amp;BarnaUpdateID=324\">Barna&#8217;s new report<\/a>): &#8220;<span class=\"bodytext\">By a three to one margin (71% to 26%) adults<br \/>\nnoted that they are personally more likely to develop their own set of<br \/>\nreligious beliefs than to accept a comprehensive set of beliefs taught<br \/>\nby a particular church. Although born again Christians were among the<br \/>\nsegments least likely to adopt the a la carte approach to beliefs, a<br \/>\nconsiderable majority even of born again adults (61%) has taken that<br \/>\nroute. Leading the charge in the move to customize one&#8217;s package of<br \/>\nbeliefs are people under the age of 25, among whom more than four out<br \/>\nof five (82%) said they develop their own combination of beliefs rather<br \/>\nthan adopt a set proposed by a church.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Third Way truth-telling: &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/28605888\">Like countless Africans<\/a>, Mzolisa looks forward to Barack Obama becoming<br \/>\nAmerica&#8217;s first black president Jan 20. Well, that commitment led him to (gasp) sip on a beer or two and (gasp, gasp) to vote Democrat. Our responsibility didn&#8217;t end last week. There&#8217;s some Fallout for Ed, who evidently is no longer so harmless: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlive.com\/living\/grand-rapids\/index.ssf\/2009\/01\/cornerstone_president_ed_dobso.html\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlive.com\/grandrapids\/stories\/index.ssf?\/base\/news-45\/123157173718450.xml&amp;coll=6\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/mikewittmer.wordpress.com\/2009\/01\/10\/and-the-word-after-that\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.msnbc.msn.com\/id\/28579289\/from\/ET\/\">So what are we to do<\/a> if this is accurate?<\/p>\n<p>I can&#8217;t get over that pilot and co-pilot successfully landing that plane in the Hudson without loss of life. One of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/wp-dyn\/content\/article\/2009\/01\/09\/AR2009010903350.html?nav%3Dhcmodule&amp;sub=AR\">Obama&#8217;s biggest challenges<\/a>, with no easy solutions; but we hope and pray that Obama and others can resolve these serious health care issues.<br \/>3. Why wasn&#8217;t <a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/story\/0,2933,477450,00.html\">this news item<\/a> worthy of national attention?<br \/>4. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/01\/11\/opinion\/11bono.html?_r=1\">Bono<\/a> probes the duality of Frank Sinatra&#8217;s famous song &#8220;I Did It My Way.&#8221; Keep your eye on Steve&#8217;s picture above when you read Bono&#8217;s piece.<br \/>5. Ernie&#8217;s our best representative in the Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n<p>Rickey Henderson is elected to the Hall of Fame, which means I bring out one of his famous lines: A reporter asked Henderson if Ken Caminiti&#8217;s estimate that 50 percent<br \/>\nof Major League players were taking steroids was accurate.
