Hirsch and Fitch believe in the missional model, and they&#8217;re best off arguing it theologically instead of by appealing to supposed population trends. I confess here and everywhere that their theology is very close to mine.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"mt-enclosure mt-enclosure-image\"><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jesuscreed\/Barn.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/120\/import\/assets_c\/2008\/12\/Barn-thumb-200x136.jpg\" alt=\"Barn.jpg\" class=\"mt-image-left\" style=\"margin: 0pt 20px 20px 0pt;float: left\" height=\"136\" width=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/span>Rick Warren, in an interview with Steven Waldman, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/News\/2008\/12\/Rick-Warren-Transcript.aspx?p=3\">candidly reveals some of his doubts<\/a>. In that interview he speaks of the social gospel, and <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/progressiverevival\/2008\/12\/rick-warren-and-the-social-gos.html\">Paul Rauschenbush<\/a> comes out defending his grandfather. I pushed back against some of what Paul said, perhaps too stiffly, so I wrote to Paul personally and we have had a brief, amiable exchange via e-mail. The dust-off between Warren and Rauschenbush is a microcosm of American religious history in the first half of the 20th Century.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of one given to gracious communication, here&#8217;s a wonderful tribute to <a href=\"http:\/\/newsweek.washingtonpost.com\/onfaith\/guestvoices\/2008\/12\/avery_dulles_friend_hero_chris.html\">Cardinal Avery Dulles<\/a>. What would you do if your child decided to<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.fayobserver.com\/editorial\/2008\/12\/17\/whats-in-a-name\/\"> marry a &#8220;Sinner&#8221;<\/a>? <a href=\"http:\/\/communityofjesus.blogspot.com\/2008\/12\/too-good-to-be-true.html\">Ted Gossard<\/a>&#8216;s got a nice post as does <a href=\"http:\/\/godhungry.org\/?p=1686\">Jim Martin<\/a> about the integration of life and ministry. Did you see <a href=\"http:\/\/eugenecho.wordpress.com\/2008\/12\/17\/going-to-jail-for-adultery\/\">Eugene<\/a>&#8216;s reflections, via Korean laws on adultery, on the State&#8217;s role in enforcing morality? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jesustheradicalpastor.com\/mangerology-jesus-first-bed\">John Frye<\/a>&#8216;s got a nice pic of what Jesus&#8217; first bed may have been like. If you are interested in Christian Zionism, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.christianitytoday.com\/books\/features\/bookwk\/081215a.html\">here&#8217;s a good review<\/a> of a recent important book.<br \/>6. John Kennedy was the first President I remember and for some reason I&#8217;d like to see <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2008\/12\/16\/us\/politics\/16caroline.html?em\">Caroline<\/a> in the Senate.<br \/>7. The very thing <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/progressiverevival\/2008\/12\/some-advocacy.html\">Marianne Williamson<\/a> says should happen (knock down walls) is what she isn&#8217;t permitting to happen. To be tolerant means to be tolerant even of those you don&#8217;t agree with. This contrasts with Obama himself. I quote: &#8220;During the course of the entire inaugural festivities, there are going to be a wide range of viewpoints that are presented and that&#8217;s how it should be, because&nbsp; that&#8217;s what America&#8217;s about. That&#8217;s part of the magic of this country, is that we are diverse and noisy and opinionated. And, so, you know, that&#8217;s the spirit in which, you know, we have put together what I think will be a terrific inauguration.
