Any reading of the birth stories, those stories that are designed to shape how we understanding Advent, reveals how central it is to God to form God&#8217;s people. Notice these words of the angel to Mary from Luke 1:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#\">29<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#\">30<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>But the angel said to her, &#8220;Do not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#\">31<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#\">32<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#\">33<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Mary&#8217;s son, the king, will be given a throne &#8212; a place to rule of God&#8217;s people.<br \/>Mary&#8217;s son, the king, will &#8220;reign over the house of Jacob.&#8221;<br \/>Mary&#8217;s son, the king, will reign over a &#8220;kingdom that will never end.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>And when Mary sings her Magnificat, she ends with these lines:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"Poetry2\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#\">54<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>He has helped his servant Israel,<br \/>remembering to be merciful<span class=\"VerseNum\"><br \/><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=1&amp;t=nivp#\">55<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>to Abraham and his descendants forever,<br \/>even as he said to our fathers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;Mary sees the benefits she experiences as benefits, not so much for herself, but for God&#8217;s servant Israel, and the act of God that proves God&#8217;s faithfulness to Abraham and his descendants.
