But there&#8217;s a great example of what is meant and it can be found in Matthew 2. I quote the whole chp in the extra text below.<\/p>\n<p>Here is what Mary meant and here is what Zechariah meant when they spoke of an unjust ruler. They at least had in mind Herod the Great. He was a corrupt, murderous, savage, merciless king and he was on the throne in Jerusalem. <\/p>\n<p>And Messiah Jesus was destined to rule above and beyond Herod the Great. Not as a result of violence; not as a result of usurping the throne through military victory &#8230; but through a kingdom of a completely different order: through compassion, through love, through self-denial, through the cross, through the power of the resurrection, and through a community that would surround and follow Jesus. On top of this, the family of Jesus would have to manuever around this corrupt leader &#8230; escaping his clutches by fleeing to Egypt. He would attract to himself people from the far reaches of the Roman empire.<\/p>\n<p>An advent activist works against such rulers &#8212; in all kinds of ways.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">1<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi&nbsp;<a class=\"ftnt\" name=\"fnt_1\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_1\"><\/a> from the east came to Jerusalem <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">2<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>and asked, &#8220;Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east <a class=\"ftnt\" name=\"fnt_2\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_2\"><\/a>and have come to worship him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">3<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">4<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>When he had called together all the people&#8217;s chief priests and teachers of the law, he asked them where the Christ <a class=\"ftnt\" name=\"fnt_3\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_3\"><\/a>was to be born. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">5<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>&#8220;In Bethlehem in Judea,&#8221; they replied, &#8220;for this is what the prophet has written:<\/p>\n<p class=\"PoetryBegin\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Poetry2\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">6<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>&#8221;&nbsp;&#8216;But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah,are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel.&#8217;<a class=\"ftnt\" name=\"fnt_4\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_4\"><\/a> &#8220;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\">&nbsp;<span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">7<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>Then Herod called the Magi secretly and found out from them the exact time the star had appeared. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">8<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>He<br \/>\nsent them to Bethlehem and said, &#8220;Go and make a careful search for the<br \/>\nchild. As soon as you find him, report to me, so that I too may go and<br \/>\nworship him.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">9<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen in the east <a class=\"ftnt\" name=\"fnt_5\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_5\"><\/a>went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">10<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">11<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>On<br \/>\ncoming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they<br \/>\nbowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and<br \/>\npresented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">12<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>And having been warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, they returned to their country by another route.<\/p>\n<p class=\"SectionHead\">The Escape to Egypt<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">13<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>When<br \/>\nthey had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. &#8220;Get<br \/>\nup,&#8221; he said, &#8220;take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt. Stay<br \/>\nthere until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to<br \/>\nkill him.&#8221; <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">14<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>So he got up, took the child and his mother during the night and left for Egypt, <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">15<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>where<br \/>\nhe stayed until the death of Herod. And so was fulfilled what the Lord<br \/>\nhad said through the prophet: &#8220;Out of Egypt I called my son.&#8221;<a class=\"ftnt\" name=\"fnt_6\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_6\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">16<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>When<br \/>\nHerod realized that he had been outwitted by the Magi, he was furious,<br \/>\nand he gave orders to kill all the boys in Bethlehem and its vicinity<br \/>\nwho were two years old and under, in accordance with the time he had<br \/>\nlearned from the Magi. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">17<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>Then what was said through the prophet Jeremiah was fulfilled:<\/p>\n<p class=\"Poetry1\">&nbsp;<span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">18<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>&#8220;A voice is heard in Ramah,weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.&#8221;&nbsp;<a class=\"ftnt\" name=\"fnt_7\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_7\"><\/a> <\/p>\n<p class=\"SectionHead\">The Return to Nazareth<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">19<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>After Herod died, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">20<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>and<br \/>\nsaid, &#8220;Get up, take the child and his mother and go to the land of<br \/>\nIsrael, for those who were trying to take the child&#8217;s life are dead.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">21<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>So he got up, took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">22<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>But<br \/>\nwhen he heard that Archelaus was reigning in Judea in place of his<br \/>\nfather Herod, he was afraid to go there. Having been warned in a dream,<br \/>\nhe withdrew to the district of Galilee, <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Mat&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">23<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>and<br \/>\nhe went and lived in a town called Nazareth.
