{"id":3787,"date":"2008-12-05T00:10:27","date_gmt":"2008-12-05T00:10:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jesuscreed\/2008\/12\/acts-of-advent-5.html"},"modified":"2008-12-05T00:10:27","modified_gmt":"2008-12-05T00:10:27","slug":"acts-of-advent-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jesuscreed\/2008\/12\/acts-of-advent-5.html","title":{"rendered":"Acts of Advent 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The first Act of Advent is Adoration, and today&#8217;s text, drawn from the stories about Simeon and Anna from Luke 2, once again draws us into seeing why we are led to adoration.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\nWe are led to adore because:<\/p>\n<p>1. Simeon, on the very sight of Jesus, saw salvation.<br \/>2. Simeon, on the very sight of Jesus, saw light.<br \/>3. Simeon, on the very sight of Jesus, saw revelation for Gentiles.<br \/>4. Simeon, on the very sight of Jesus, saw glory for Israel.<br \/>5. Anna, on the very sight of Jesus, saw the redemption of Israel.<\/p>\n<p>These elderly poor folks in the Temple, when they saw Jesus, saw God&#8217;s act of redemption. What do we see when we see Jesus? They adored Jesus; we are led to adore him today.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">25<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>Now<br \/>\nthere was a man in Jerusalem called Simeon, who was righteous and<br \/>\ndevout. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy<br \/>\nSpirit was upon him. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">26<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not die before he had seen the Lord&#8217;s Christ. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">27<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>Moved<br \/>\nby the Spirit, he went into the temple courts. When the parents brought<br \/>\nin the child Jesus to do for him what the custom of the Law required, <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">28<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying:<\/p>\n<p class=\"Poetry2\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">29<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>&#8220;Sovereign Lord, as you have promised, you now dismiss <a class=\"ftnt\" name=\"fnt_4\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_4\"><\/a>your servant in peace.<span class=\"VerseNum\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">30<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>For my eyes have seen your salvation,<span class=\"VerseNum\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">31<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>which you have prepared in the sight of all people,<span class=\"VerseNum\"> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">32<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>a light for revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\">&nbsp;<span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">33<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>The child&#8217;s father and mother marveled at what was said about him. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">34<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>Then<br \/>\nSimeon blessed them and said to Mary, his mother: &#8220;This child is<br \/>\ndestined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a<br \/>\nsign that will be spoken against, <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">35<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph\"><span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">36<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>There<br \/>\nwas also a prophetess, Anna, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of<br \/>\nAsher. She was very old; she had lived with her husband seven years<br \/>\nafter her marriage, <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">37<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>and then was a widow until she was eighty-four. <a class=\"ftnt\" name=\"fnt_5\" href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#_fnt_5\"><\/a>She never left the temple but worshiped night and day, fasting and praying. <span class=\"VerseNum\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blueletterbible.org\/tools\/printerFriendly.cfm?b=Luk&amp;c=2&amp;t=nivp#\">38<\/a>&nbsp;<\/span>Coming<br \/>\nup to them at that very moment, she gave thanks to God and spoke about<br \/>\nthe child to all who were looking forward to the redemption of<br \/>\nJerusalem.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The first Act of Advent is Adoration, and today&#8217;s text, drawn from the stories about Simeon and Anna from Luke 2, once again draws us into seeing why we are led to adoration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":70,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[31],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3787","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-advent"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
