The port was on the Tiber and on the coast,  though the growing problem with silt accumulation made it less than the best of ports. Anyway, Ostia was a big place &#8230; bigger in size than Pompei. By the end of the 1st Century AD, it had it all &#8230; including &#8230; <!--more|inline--><br \/>\nThis long entry road from the Porta Romana all the way to the Porta Marina (at the sea).<br \/>\n<a class=\"imagelink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jesuscreed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/img_0443.JPG\" title=\"img_0443.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jesuscreed.org\/2008\/06\/img_0443.thumbnail.JPG\" alt=\"img_0443.JPG\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nA massive complex of baths. (The walls are all cemented, I suppose to seal them from further erosion.)<br \/>\n<a class=\"imagelink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jesuscreed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/img_0444.JPG\" title=\"img_0444.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jesuscreed.org\/2008\/06\/img_0444.thumbnail.JPG\" alt=\"img_0444.JPG\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nA large and impressive theater:<br \/>\n<a class=\"imagelink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jesuscreed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/img_0450.JPG\" title=\"img_0450.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jesuscreed.org\/2008\/06\/img_0450.thumbnail.JPG\" alt=\"img_0450.JPG\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nJust a big place full of buildings.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jesuscreed.org\/2008\/06\/img_0452.thumbnail.JPG\" alt=\"img_0452.JPG\" \/><br \/>\nAnd temples:<br \/>\n<a class=\"imagelink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jesuscreed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/img_0453.JPG\" title=\"img_0453.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.jesuscreed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/img_0453.thumbnail.JPG\" alt=\"img_0453.JPG\" \/><\/a><a class=\"imagelink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jesuscreed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/img_0454.JPG\" title=\"img_0454.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jesuscreed.org\/2008\/06\/img_0454.thumbnail.JPG\" alt=\"img_0454.JPG\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAugustine&#8217;s mother died here, and this is the plaque put up from his 9th book of Confessions:<br \/>\n<a class=\"imagelink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jesuscreed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/img_0447.JPG\" title=\"img_0447.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jesuscreed.org\/2008\/06\/img_0447.thumbnail.JPG\" alt=\"img_0447.JPG\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nAnd of course the Tiber river leading up to Rome&#8230;<br \/>\n<a class=\"imagelink\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jesuscreed.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2008\/06\/img_0457.JPG\" title=\"img_0457.JPG\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.jesuscreed.org\/2008\/06\/img_0457.thumbnail.JPG\" alt=\"img_0457.JPG\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nBy the 4th Century AD, Ostia was being abandoned and then the Saracens began to invade, and then later they built a more secure place up the road. And one thing they built was a piazza and a medieval building which was our hotel for the night.
