We could do this if we chose to. But for it to convince we need evidence that Paul thought in terms of ecology, which he didn&#8217;t. Which isn&#8217;t to say we can&#8217;t learn things about ecology by reading Paul&#8217;s letters and inferring from his theology to ecological stances.<br \/>\nHere&#8217;s another example from W-K: &#8220;So it isn&#8217;t a stretch to say that in the Roman empire, &#8216;thrones, dominions, rulers and powers&#8217; referred to Rome &#8212; to its <em>ruler<\/em>, Caesar, on the <em>throne<\/em> established by the gods, to his <em>dominion<\/em> over all the known world, established and maintained by the <em>power<\/em> and might of the empire&#8221; (91-92).<br \/>\nOnce again, let&#8217;s look at Dunn: <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?ie=UTF8&amp;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2FEpistles-Colossians-Philemon-Commentary-International%2Fdp%2F0802824412%3Fie%3DUTF8%26s%3Dbooks%26qid%3D1190126215%26sr%3D1-9&amp;tag=jescre-20&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325\">Colossians and Philemon<\/a><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.assoc-amazon.com\/e\/ir?t=jescre-20&amp;l=ur2&amp;o=1\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" style=\"border:none !important;margin:0px !important\" \/><\/em>. Does he see Rome and the empire in these terms? We ought to observe that Dunn&#8217;s first degree was in economics. &#8220;The fact that all four terms [here he has trotted through evidence in the Jewish traditions] thus refer only to the invisible, heavenly realm&#8221; (92).<br \/>\nOddly enough, he says Wink &#8212; whose view is not that far from W-K &#8212; &#8220;offers quite an effective demythologization of the four powers&#8221; (93). There&#8217;s hope.
