Missional Jesus is now approached by his followers, two of his favorites, who have the wrong thing in mind. They want to be MVP’s of the apostolic band; Jesus lets them have it with words that penetrate.
\nHere is Mark 10:35-45:
\nThen James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came to him. \u201cTeacher,\u201d they said, \u201cwe want you to do for us whatever we ask.\u201d
\n36 \u201cWhat do you want me to do for you?\u201d he asked.
\n37 They replied, \u201cLet one of us sit at your right and the other at your left in your glory.\u201d
\n38 \u201cYou don’t know what you are asking,\u201d Jesus said. \u201cCan you drink the cup I drink or be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with?\u201d
\n39 \u201cWe can,\u201d they answered. Jesus said to them, \u201cYou will drink the cup I drink and be baptized with the baptism I am baptized with, 40 but to sit at my right or left is not for me to grant. These places belong to those for whom they have been prepared.\u201d
\n41 When the ten heard about this, they became indignant with James and John. 42 Jesus called them together and said, \u201cYou know that those who are regarded as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. 43 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.\u201d<\/em>
\n1. Missional Jesus opposes the desire for prestige, fame, and improper uses of power.
\n2. Missional Jesus asks a question, the boys answer it right, but how little they know of what they are saying. “Sure, you’ll get my baptism and drink my cup, but you have no idea what either is — martryrdom.”
\n3. Missional Jesus creates a community in which power is noted by service — self-sacrificing love for the other. A society shaped by the Jesus Creed<\/a>\"\".
\n4. The Jesus Creed is the way of life for Jesus — the way that led to the Son of man’s cross — and that way of life is the way for missional followers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
