Camps and camping have been special to many of us for a long, long time. My theory about what makes camps tick — and I’d like to know your thoughts — is that they “encapsulate” people. That is, people get away from social and financial and home-y and all other distractions and have time to think about God, about their life, and about their church.
\nIn “conversion theory” this is called “encapsulation.” Camps intentionally create a space away from everything — sacred space, space away from busy space and distracting space. We might prefer to call it a “retreat”. Still, the magic of camps works because it breaks us away from our routines and gives us open space for new thoughts, for prayer, for solitude, and for hearing anew the gospel.
