{"id":692,"date":"2010-11-24T14:20:23","date_gmt":"2010-11-24T14:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jazztheologian\/2010\/11\/announcing-sankofa-leadership-institute.html"},"modified":"2010-11-24T14:20:23","modified_gmt":"2010-11-24T14:20:23","slug":"announcing-sankofa-leadership-institute","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jazztheologian\/2010\/11\/announcing-sankofa-leadership-institute.html","title":{"rendered":"Announcing Sankofa Leadership Institute"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A few months ago I shared with you that I was sensing a need to start an African-American leadership institute (<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jazztheologian\/2010\/09\/im-thinking-about-starting-a-leadership-program.html\">click here<\/a>). &nbsp;My primary calling always has been and always will be to reach all people. &nbsp;That is why I love serving as the Lead Pastor of Colorado Community Church. &nbsp;It is a joy to shepherd a congregation made of of all races, classes and many nationalities. &nbsp;CCC is a true taste of what heaven is going to be like!&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>If I could only do one thing in the kingdom of God, then, hands down, leading CCC would be it. &nbsp;Thankfully, I have the freedom to do more: &nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/ASIN\/0310282527\/1n9867a-20\">Write books<\/a>, blog for Beliefnet.com,&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.kbm.org\/index.php?view=categoryevents&amp;id=14%3Arobert-gelinas&amp;option=com_eventlist&amp;Itemid=343\">travel &amp;&nbsp;speak<\/a> and launch new ministries (<a href=\"http:\/\/project127.com\/\">like Project 127<\/a>). &nbsp;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>So, after much prayer &amp; dreaming I&#8217;ve decided to start Sankofa&#8211;An institute for transformative African-American leaders. &nbsp;The goal will be to inspire servant leaders to receive wisdom form God, practice Christianity, understand our calling and sacrifice as people of the cross.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Sankofa is the West African concept that we must remember our roots as we move forward. &nbsp;This is symbolized by a bird in flight that, as it soars forward, it looks backwards. &nbsp;In its mouth it carries an egg. &nbsp;For us this symbolizes the need for leaders who can glean from the past and lead us into Gods future. &nbsp;As we do so, we nurture those things that have yet to hatch and bring for life. &nbsp;&#8220;Sankofa&#8221; literally means, &#8220;It is not wrong for us to go back and find that which we have forgotten.&#8221;<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Who? What? Where? When? Why?
