{"id":632,"date":"2010-04-30T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-30T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jazztheologian\/2010\/04\/jazz-theology-harmonizing-gods-word.html"},"modified":"2010-04-30T08:00:00","modified_gmt":"2010-04-30T08:00:00","slug":"jazz-theology-harmonizing-gods-word","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jazztheologian\/2010\/04\/jazz-theology-harmonizing-gods-word.html","title":{"rendered":"Jazz Theology:  Harmonizing God&#8217;s Word"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><i><u><b>We live a composed life guided by the eternal<br \/>\nmelody of the Word of God as we add our<br \/>\nown voice.<\/b><\/u><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">Jazz theologians honor and revere<br \/>\nGod&#8217;s word.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>We spend our lives<br \/>\nreading it, memorizing it and meditating upon its&#8217; meaning.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>However, we are careful to not put<br \/>\nourselves in a position of superiority over the scriptures.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>We do this when we think that it is our<br \/>\njob to read them rather than let them read us.<span>&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">For so long scripture has been<br \/>\ntreated like a science project in that we make observations and draw<br \/>\nconclusions.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>This is necessary but<br \/>\nnot sufficient.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><i><b>What if God&#8217;s word<br \/>\nis also a song that sets us free to compose, a melody with room for us to join<br \/>\nin with the ancients?<\/b><\/i><span>&nbsp; <\/span>If it is,<br \/>\nthen once we have learned its&#8217; tune and spent copious time in the woodshed<br \/>\npracticing its&#8217; intricacies then we are free&#8211;truly free&#8211;to harmonize with<br \/>\nthose around us.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>We can take the<br \/>\nrisk of improvisation for we are free within the bonds and bounds of the song.<\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We live a composed life guided by the eternal melody of the Word of God as we add our own voice.
