{"id":630,"date":"2010-04-26T08:00:00","date_gmt":"2010-04-26T08:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jazztheologian\/2010\/04\/jazz-theology-creative-tension.html"},"modified":"2010-04-26T08:00:00","modified_gmt":"2010-04-26T08:00:00","slug":"jazz-theology-creative-tension","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jazztheologian\/2010\/04\/jazz-theology-creative-tension.html","title":{"rendered":"Jazz Theology:  Creative Tension"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><!--StartFragment--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><i><u><b>We walk with<br \/>\nChrist, embracing creative tension,<br \/>\njoining in the mystery of life in concert.<\/b><b><\/b><\/u><\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\">God is the most creative being in<br \/>\nthe universe.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Yet, we so often<br \/>\nfind ourselves in a rut in our relationship with him.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>When the disciples walked with Jesus they weren&#8217;t<br \/>\nbored.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>They experienced the<br \/>\nspectrum of emotions as they interacted with Christ.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>We need creativity in our own walk with God and also in how<br \/>\nwe help others to walk with God.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>In jazz creativity arises out of tension.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It is the result of not having to resolve everything.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Instead of either\/or it is fine with<br \/>\nboth and for the mystery is far more intriguing than the solution.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"text-indent:.5in\"><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: 0.5in\">Jazz saxophonist, John Coltrane, knew the value of creative tension professionally but had to learn it personally for he his life was a paradox:<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>He who could play anything except the sound he wanted&#8211;the sound of God.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>After years of searching he eventually became satisfied with the journey.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>Jesus called, &#8220;Follow me.&#8221;<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>Our response is to follow, that is, to walk with him.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal;text-indent: 0.5in\"><span><\/span>As we do, he tells parables and points out peculiar items in his creation.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>We are called to the journey.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>The resolution is in his hands.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>When Coltrane realized this wrote A Love Supreme.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>An album in which he expressed extreme creativity in his spirituality as he created four spiritual stages with each song:<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>Acknowledgement, Pursuance, Resolution &amp; Psalm.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We walk with Christ, embracing creative tension, joining in the mystery of life in concert.
