<\/span>We do not need to be<br \/>\njazz musicians to practice a jazz-shaped faith.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Rather, there are basic concepts that are most easily<br \/>\nobserved in music but are in no way limited to those who play instruments.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>Once we are familiar with the basic<br \/>\nelements we begin to notice them elsewhere in art, poetry, novels and sports.<span>&nbsp; <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">There are three fundamentals to jazz and thus a jazz-shaped<br \/>\nfaith&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><\/p>\n<p><!--EndFragment--><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\">Syncopation:<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>Accenting the offbeat.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>This is what allows jazz to swing and when applied to prayer or Bible study it brings to light not hidden meaning but meaning that is often missed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\">Improvisation&#8211;when we are so familiar with the basic groove of God&#8217;s word and the way of Christ we are in a position to experiment and play a little.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>Improvisation is the result of living in community with other practicing Christians who allow us the grace and encouragement to find our own voice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\">Call and Response:<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>The essence of a jazz-shaped faith is listening.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>God called to his creation on the first page of scripture and continued to call to Adam and Eve as they hid in shame.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span>When we develop our ear for the voice of God and the needs of others we place ourselves in a position to respond by donning the towel and basin and serving others as Christ did.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin-top: 0px;margin-right: 0px;margin-bottom: 0.75em;margin-left: 0px;border-top-width: 0px;border-right-width: 0px;border-bottom-width: 0px;border-left-width: 0px;border-style: initial;border-color: initial;padding-top: 0px;padding-right: 0px;padding-bottom: 0px;padding-left: 0px;font-size: 1em;font-weight: normal\">A jazz theologian is someone who incorporates these fundamentals into evangelism, spiritual direction, community, scripture, calling, incarnation &amp;
