{"id":499,"date":"2006-12-15T22:40:00","date_gmt":"2006-12-15T22:40:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jazztheologian\/2006\/12\/the-original-ch-4.html"},"modified":"2006-12-15T22:40:00","modified_gmt":"2006-12-15T22:40:00","slug":"the-original-ch-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jazztheologian\/2006\/12\/the-original-ch-4.html","title":{"rendered":"The Original Christmas Carols (p6)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jazztheologian.typepad.com\/.shared\/image.html?\/photos\/uncategorized\/shepherds_bg.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"296\" alt=\"Shepherds_bg\" src=\"https:\/\/jazztheologian.typepad.com\/findingthegroove\/images\/shepherds_bg.jpg\" width=\"200\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a> If we can understand what the angels were doing than we can BE angels too!<\/p>\n<p>The passage clearly says that they were proclaiming the gospel.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>&quot;Do not be afraid.&nbsp; I bring you good news (gospel) of great joy that will be for all people.&quot;<\/em> (Lk. 2.10)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The gospel?&nbsp; What makes what the angels are <u>doing<\/u> the gospel.&nbsp; The answer is found not in what they are saying but in what they are doing.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>The first people to hear of the birth of Jesus are social outcast.&nbsp; Shepherds were unable to keep up with all of the ceremonial requirements, such as the meticulous hand washings, so they were ostracized.&nbsp; Even though these shepherds could be guarding the lambs used in the sacrifices at the temple, they themselves do not sense that they are included in Gods plan.&nbsp; That is, until the angels show up and say&#8230;<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>&quot;This will be a sign to you:&nbsp; You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.&quot;<\/em> v12<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">What made that a sign to THEM?&nbsp; What a shock it must have been to them that the true Lamb of God was lying in the midst of the smells of animal urine and feces.&nbsp; What good news that must have been!<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Be an angel!&nbsp; Proclaim the good news to the margins so that it can be carried to the mainstream (v17)<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Be an angel!&nbsp; Learn to proclaim the good news with &quot;signs&quot; that are truly good news to all who hear.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Be an angel with a jazzitude!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If we can understand what the angels were doing than we can BE angels too!
