About a year ago my wife and I rearranged our house to maximize family relationships. In the process we moved our television upstairs out of the main traffic flow of the house, unhooked it from cable and attached a set of rabbit ears.

It is one of the best things we ever did for our family. We immediately began to spend more time with each other talking, wrestling and playing games. It’s been great because I still had my own personal TV in our bedroom complete with dozens of cable options.

That was until a few days ago…

One of my goals is to truly live James 1.27. To care for the orphan & widow and keep myself from being poluted by the world. I have found it virtually impossible to fulfill the poluted part with such easy access to the talking box.

I spend so much time taking in meaningless media. Outside of the occaional show on the discovery channel or Book TV on CSPAN the majority of what I watched was of no consequence. When I woke up in the morning I couldn’t tell you what ay Leno’s monologue or Letterman’s top ten list was the night before. And yet, I watched it religiously…that’s the problem, James says that there is a different kind of "Religion the God our father accepts." To say nothing of all of the "questionable" progamming. The shear number of murders on the evening drama and comprimising situations on the latest reality shows have to be taking a toll on my psyche…my soul.

I so much desire to pray without ceasing. To devote every moment of my life to full communion with God. I don’t want to have one stray thought that is not about or because of my father in heaven. And so I know that it was the right thing to do when this past week I took my TV to the basement and canceled the cable service to my house.

I know this is what I needed to do but I am going through withdrawals. I’ve caught myself holding the remote control that I had memorized and staring at the spot where my friend the television once sat…Lord help me!

I’m am in the midst of a second round of TV withdrawals.
