{"id":222,"date":"2008-09-08T07:58:36","date_gmt":"2008-09-08T07:58:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jazztheologian\/2008\/09\/the-common-good-p2.html"},"modified":"2008-09-08T07:58:36","modified_gmt":"2008-09-08T07:58:36","slug":"the-common-good-p2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jazztheologian\/2008\/09\/the-common-good-p2.html","title":{"rendered":"The Common Good (p2)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#039;m well into Kerzen and Kelley&#039;s book <span style=\"font-style: italic\">A Nation For All<\/span>. &#160;And while it does feel a bit partisan the concepts are still intriguing. &#160;They identify key themes of the Catholic social tradition. &#160;Some of which are: &#160;<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>The Dignity of the Human Person.<\/li>\n<li>The Common Good.&#160;<\/li>\n<li>Solidarity (our membership in one global family)&#160;<\/li>\n<li>Subsidiarity (the essnetial and positive role government plays in promoting human dignity and the common good.)&#160;<\/li>\n<li>The Preferential Option for the Poor.&#160;<\/li>\n<li>The Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers.<\/li>\n<li>Stewardship of God&#039;s Creation.<\/li>\n<li>Peace&#160;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>After tracing these themes through history they then move to a discussion of Church and State. &#160;They argue that we need to see a &quot;distinction between <span style=\"font-style: italic\">faith<\/span> and <span style=\"font-style: italic\">religion<\/span>.&quot; &#160;The point being that while religion (the practices of a community in the worship of their God) do not always fit &#160;in the public square; people driven into action by their faith need to fully engage government for the common good.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>They warn that when people of faith engage politics we need to realize that it will require that we learn the skill of compromise. &#160;Not that we compromise our personal beliefs but we learn to compromise with others for the sake of some gain vs. no gain at all. &#160;This keeps us from seeing others as enemies and from seeking to use politics to force others to live they way we think they should. &#160;When we realize that political engagement involves compromise then we choose the art of persuasion and set aside the soap box.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#039;m well into Kerzen and Kelley&#039;s book A Nation For All. &#160;And while it does feel a bit partisan the concepts are still intriguing. &#160;They identify key themes of the Catholic social tradition. &#160;Some of which are: &#160; The Dignity of the Human Person.
