{"id":219,"date":"2008-08-26T22:14:07","date_gmt":"2008-08-26T22:14:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jazztheologian\/2008\/08\/pro-life-and-partyless.html"},"modified":"2008-08-26T22:14:07","modified_gmt":"2008-08-26T22:14:07","slug":"pro-life-and-partyless","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jazztheologian\/2008\/08\/pro-life-and-partyless.html","title":{"rendered":"Pro-Life and Partyless&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I&#039;m pro-life and without a party. &#160;I&#039;m a one issue voter and I can&#039;t find a party with a platform that fully addresses the sacredness of life in all of its complexity. &#160;So I&#039;m pro-life and partyless! &#160;Usually the Democrats are thought of as pro-choice and the Republicans as pro-life; therefore, most think that the choice is obvious. To me it&#039;s not so black and white.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>When I say I&#039;m pro-life I&#039;m referring to what is known as the &quot;seamless garment of life&quot; (aka&#8211;&quot;Consistent Life Ethic). &#160;Joseph Cardinal Bernardin was one of the early pioneers of this school of thought. &#160;The basic premise is that all life is sacred from womb to the tomb&#8211;conception to natural death. &#160;That being the case a true pro-life stance must protect all life not just some life. &#160;For all life is connected&#8211;one seamless garment&#8211;and needs to be protected in all phases. &#160;A consistent life ethic seeks to be on the life side of abortion, embryo\/stem cell research, poverty, health care, education, racism, sexism, genocide, AIDS, environmental issues, war, the death penalty and euthanasia.<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>Eileen Egan first coined the term &quot;seamless garment&quot; when she said, &quot;The protection of life is a seamless garment. &#160;You can&#039;t protect some life and not others.&quot;<\/div>\n<p><\/p>\n<div>So I&#039;m pro-life and partyless&#8230;guess I&#039;ll have to stick with the Kingdom of God!<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#039;m pro-life and without a party. &#160;I&#039;m a one issue voter and I can&#039;t find a party with a platform that fully addresses the sacredness of life in all of its complexity. &#160;So I&#039;m pro-life and partyless!
