{"id":1332,"date":"2011-09-23T07:00:12","date_gmt":"2011-09-23T11:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jazztheologian\/?p=1332"},"modified":"2011-09-23T12:16:19","modified_gmt":"2011-09-23T16:16:19","slug":"rite-of-passage-a-fathers-blessing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jazztheologian\/2011\/09\/rite-of-passage-a-fathers-blessing.html","title":{"rendered":"Rite of Passage:  A Father&#8217;s Blessing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One evening, as I sat around the table with a handful of my buddies, the conversation turned toward our fathers. \u00a0I was quiet for a long time. \u00a0As a fatherless adult I didn&#8217;t know how to engage the topic. \u00a0Then a question came to mind that I had always wanted an answer to, so I asked, &#8220;When did you know you that you were a man?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/109\/2011\/09\/riteofpassage.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-1333\" src=\"https:\/\/wp-media.beliefnet.com\/sites\/109\/2011\/09\/riteofpassage.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"178\" height=\"280\" \/><\/a>One by one my friends shared stories of how they grew into manhood. \u00a0I was in my early twenties and, as I listened to them share, an essential fact of my life was confirmed: \u00a0I was a man.<\/p>\n<p>The difference between my friends and I is that they knew this fact and I didn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n<p>That&#8217;s why I am grateful for Jim McBride&#8217;s new book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Rite-Passage-Blessing-Jim-McBride\/dp\/0802458807\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1313691981&amp;sr=8-1\" target=\"_blank\">Rite of Passage: \u00a0A Father&#8217;s Blessing<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>McBride believes that, &#8220;Adulthood shouldn&#8217;t be an accident.&#8221; and &#8220;In an era of aging pre-adults and wandering &#8220;adult-olecents,&#8221; it is essential that we as parents guide our children toward knowing when they have crossed from childhood to adulthood. \u00a0It is imperative that a father &#8220;call out the man or woman in his growing children?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As the father of six children, I couldn&#8217;t agree more!<\/p>\n<p>(<a href=\"http:\/\/riteofpassageblogtour.weebly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to see what others are saying about Rite of Passage<\/a>)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One evening, as I sat around the table with a handful of my buddies, the conversation turned toward our fathers. \u00a0I was quiet for a long time. \u00a0As a fatherless adult I didn&#8217;t know how to engage the topic. \u00a0Then a question came to mind that I had always wanted an answer to, so I&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":79,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-1332","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-misc"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v23.9 -
