{"id":1266,"date":"2011-06-17T12:13:38","date_gmt":"2011-06-17T16:13:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.beliefnet.com\/jazztheologian\/?p=1266"},"modified":"2011-06-18T11:14:40","modified_gmt":"2011-06-18T15:14:40","slug":"for-the-fatherless","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.beliefnet.com\/columnists\/jazztheologian\/2011\/06\/for-the-fatherless.html","title":{"rendered":"For the Fatherless&#8211;In Honor of My True Dad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend is so bittersweet for those of us who grew up without fathers. \u00a0The statistics are 40% of all children and 70+% of African-Americans grow up without a man in the house. \u00a0It creates a pain and longing that lasts a lifetime.<\/p>\n<p>I still remember my grandmother taking me to a department store and flagging down a random store clerk in the mens section and asking him if he would teach me how to tie a tie. \u00a0Till this day I don&#8217;t know who that man was but even now, through my tears, I say, &#8220;Thank you.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Actor and poet, Daniel Beaty, knows the pain well. \u00a0Every time I watch his poem, &#8220;Knock, Knock,&#8221; I can&#8217;t stop the tears from flowing.<\/p>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Def Poetry: Daniel Beaty - Knock Knock (Official Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/9eYH0AFx6yI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<p>On this Father&#8217;s Day weekend I want to recognize my True Father. \u00a0The scriptures say that God is &#8220;A father to the fatherless.&#8221; (Ps. 68.5) He has provided for me beyond belief. \u00a0I have never gone without. \u00a0God has been my friend, confidant and sustainer. \u00a0When I have wandered from the path set out for me, my Father in heaven (HALLOWED BE HIS NAME!) has gently disciplined me with grace and truth.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>I want to shout it from the mountaintops that my God has been a great Dad!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you need a father then hear his word today, &#8220;Here I am! \u00a0I stand at the door and knock. \u00a0If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me.&#8221; \u00a0(Rev. 3.20)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This weekend is so bittersweet for those of us who grew up without fathers. \u00a0The statistics are 40% of all children and 70+% of African-Americans grow up without a man in the house. \u00a0It creates a pain and longing that lasts a lifetime.
